Kolam (also known as rangoli) is a traditional Indian art that resembles sandpainting. Patterns, usually geometric designs, are created by female family members on the floors in front of their houses using rice powder.
Colourful kolams adorn the entrances to Hindu homes during Indian festivals, weddings and celebrations. In Malaysia, Kolams are also seen in shopping malls during Deepavali, popularly known as The Festival Of Lights.
Besides their aesthetic appeal, kolams are also a symbol of prosperity and believed to ward off evil. During Deepavali, Kolams are drawn to welcome the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi Devi into the home so she could bestow her blessings on the family. Read more.....
