Chinese New Year Cookies

Now that the holidays are officially over, I can finally return to normalcy, right? Wrong!  Another round of preparations for the next festival has just begun!!! This Chinese Lunar Year which is the year of the horse, by the way, falls on the 31st of January 2014. That means......
more excuses to squander housework time for baking cookies!  Yayyyyy!
Cherry Blossoms and red lanterns are so quintessentially Chinese, so I came up with these. What do you think?

Eye Makeup by Tal Peleg

Hope you all had a terrific Christmas and are enjoying what's remaining of 2013 with your loved ones. We had a wonderful Christmas. My sisters and their families from Singapore and Canada and cousins from Australia celebrated  Christmas over lunch at my parents' place. Lots of chaos but a very fun occasion.

Malaysian schools open on Thursday, Jan 2, 2014 and it will be tough to get back into rhythm after a two month break. I know, I've been slacking in the blogging department - blame it on the holiday mood that makes you wanna just sit back and relax and do nothing except maybe bake cookies!

Meanwhile, enjoy these mind-blowing mini works of art by makeup artist Tal Peleg from Israel who uses eyelids as her canvas.

Poinsettias

I love poinsettias; they are such an essential part of the Yuletide season. An old Mexican legend has it that in the 16th century, a young girl  who was too poor to buy a gift for the Christmas celebration was inspired by an angel to collect the roadside weed and offer it at the church altar. Red "flowers" miraculously sprouted and the poinsettia was created.
You don't find poinsettias here on our side of the pond. Our poinsettias in Malaysia are grown in the highland greenhouses. We call them 'bunga Krismas' in Malay which literally translates as Christmas flower.
I am having fun experimenting with buttercream icing and made these poinsettia cupcakes - my first attempt.

Fondant Snowman Cupcakes

My neighbour who has just migrated to Austrialia left me a big tub of fondant that I had no idea what to do with. I've never worked with fondant before. My clumsy fingers couldn't handle anything else other than rolling balls and stacking them together so I ended up making these snowmen.
Fondant is kinda like grown-up play doh!
