Gallimaufry#56

Just a gallimaufry of photos 📷

Gardenia
Seafood lunch at Tanjung Tualang
Once a tin-mining boomtown reputed to have the largest tin dredge in the country, Tanjung Tualang is now renowned for its jumbo freshwater prawns. The town earned the moniker "Prawn Town" when the abandoned mining ponds were converted into prawn farms by their resourceful owners.

We had our prawns done in 2 different styles :
  •  pan-fried with supreme soy sauce 🍤
  •  braised in salted-egg sauce 🦐
They don't come any fresher than these!

Supreme Soy Sauce
Salted-egg sauce

Catfish
It may not be visually appealing, but it more than makes up for it in taste!
There is a moonflower vine in the nursing home where my mom is residing, but I have never been able to see the blooms in their full glory as their petals unfurl only after dark. Visitors are not allowed in the home after 6:00 PM.  Rules are rules!

But thanks to my dear blogger buddy Mariette, I have this photo from her lovely blog to share for those who have never seen a moonflower.
An elusive beauty that blooms under the light of the moon and then folds its petals as soon as the sun rises until the night arrives again sounds almost vampire-ish!

FROM THE TRAVEL ARCHIVES

Heidelberg 2019
Charlie
This painting outside a noodle shop brings back fond memories of my childhood 🍜
Take note of the samfoo, jade bangle and wooden red clogs. The ensemble was typically worn by Chinese women back in those days when I was growing up in the 60s.
The ceramic bowls with the trademark rooster were very common in Chinese households and noodle shops during that era. The first rooster bowls originated in China. They were hand-drawn by the Hakka community over a century ago. Still ubiquitous in Asia, the rooster bowls of today, however, are mass-produced to preserve the nostalgia. Even melamine imitations are available!
The rooster motif represents perseverance, tenacity, and prosperity

  3. Love the photo of the dressed up dog! Thanks for sharing the moon flower pics I have never seen them before. And I love Heidelberg, such a beautiful town. I have some smll bowls with roosters on them, perhaps they are from China, too! Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie

  4. What a great sea food! Those shrimps are so big ... it isn't easy to find them in the Mediterranean sea.
Heidelberg's historic centre seems a beautiful place to visit. I like its old buildings and alleys covered withcobblestones, which I see in your picture.
Interesting info about the The rooster motif! Nice post, Veronica :-)
    Have a nice weekend!

  5. As always, I love to see the plants who grow in your corner of the world! I know the Gardenia, but I have never seen a Moonflower before Veronica. The flowers are very beautiful.
Take care, and have a great weekend!
    Hugs.

  6. The tailings ponds from mines are generally filled with deadly chemicals of the worst kind. Has anyone ever tested those shrimp?

  7. It's Judee from Gluten Free A-Z- so many wonderful photos. I love the flowers and the adorable photo of "Charlie" . The information that you shared about the significance of the photo outside the noodle shop was very interesting especially about the rooster bowls.

  8. Dearest Veronica,
You mention Supreme Soy Sauce but do you also know the Ketjap Manis that we had in Indonesia and also in The Netherlands under the brand name of Konimex? It is thick and sweet and I've used it in soups but since I'm diabetic I've cut down on its yummy use.
LOVE that Gardenia, they are so heavenly in looks and fragrance.
And then SURPRISE your mention of my humble blog with your Moonflower photos. Indeed at your Mom's nursing home it will be difficult for ever seeing one fully open—due to the visitor restrictions.
But how lovely for the Ipomoea alba or Moonflower to thrive in a tropical climate! They can continue to show their Vampire–ish beauty!
    Thanks for the mention!
    LOVE your 2019 Heidelberg photo.
Always interesting and informative your posts!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  25. Quite the feast on display!
Was Charlie dressed up for Halloween, or is that his usual garb for unpleasant weather?

Happy WW and a fine week!

  46. The moonflower is beautiful. We have never heard of one before. It looks like it is made of cloth. It's sad the rules don't let you be at the home after six. Gramma was in a couple homes for a while when she was recovering from heart issues and we hated all the rules the places had.

  47. ...you sure have some delicious looks food. Take care and stay well.

  55. Veronica Lee, your gallimaufry collections are always so intriguing, colorful and delicious looking (the food portions). The prawn looked like food I would enjoy and I am sure the catfish is as good as you stated, but not something I want to try. Thanks for sharing the moonflower image. What was the story behind Charlie and his outfit as the image from the photo archive.

Also, thanks for your recent visit and comment, glad you liked my orange color post!
