Gallimaufry#57

Just a gallimaufry of photos 📷

Peregrina

Osmoxylon

Dinner
Locust or grasshopper? I can never tell.

Balcony views from my son's condo
In Malaysia, you will find a masjid (mosque) in every neighbourhood. 🕌
Can you spot the masjid?
Currently, there are 6,850 registered mosques in Malaysia.
Picture worth a thousand memories
Growing up, when we weren't in school, we spent half the time playing outside until we heard the lilting echoes of the maghrib (sunset prayer) from the kampung (village) mosque as dusk slowly dimmed into darkness. It was our cue to dash home and clean up just in time for dinner or risk an ass whooping!  Oh, those carefree days!
Hopscotch was one of our favourite games. All it took was a chalk and a stone to turn a pavement into a no-expense, fun-filled playground. Life was so much simpler then!

  3. Dearest Veronica,
Talking about non–expensive at the time we grew up! And we learned so much along the way.
Love the Peregrina photo with the rain drops.
As for identifying a grasshopper versus a locust—I'm lost as well!
But I sure love the lovely Confederate rose they're sitting on:

Those balcony views bring us back to South East Asia... such a familiar view—even without the noises it brings back memories.
    Big hugs,
    Mariette

  5. I loved hop scotch as a child too!

  6. What is the difference between a locust and a grasshopper? I thought they were the same (something to do with how many of them there are?).

Ah, hopscotch. Loved that as a kid. And then there was a different version we did as well, that we called Chinese Hopscotch, but I'm guessing that's not the current name it goes by.

  7. I know that game too. Happy weekend, Veronica!

  8. Wonderful photos. We often played hopscotch when I was growing up in London, and used to love playing on the bombsites that were still everywhere after the war - dangerous, but we always had fun! Hugs, Valerie

  13. Oh, life was much simpler back 'then.' We played kick the can until the sun began to set. So much fun. And all we needed was a can!!

We are back from vacation and I marveled at the mix of old and new architecture in the cities we visited. I see the same in your photos. The humble homes and the majestic skyscrapers.

Great capture of the grasshopper?? Locust?? against that delicate pink bloom.

  18. Life WAS simpler then. Sometimes I'll see chalked hopscotch games on our sidewalks here and they always make me smile. You have the most beautiful and unusual (to me) images of food and flowers. I want to explore every single one!

  21. I loved playing hopscotch as a child, and even now, when I walk through a school yard where a hopscotch is painted on the ground, I'll do a few hops through it. We used to draw them with chalk.

  28. An amazing variety of photos you give us today!!

Hopscotch was a big favorite in mid 1960's Utah. You are right chalk and a rock was all that was needed. The girls beat the boys really badly at that game.

  34. I played hopscotch all the time. We found ways to entertain ourselves outside with very little. I thought grasshopper when I first looked then I thought maybe locust. Who knows? Your photos are beautiful. I've never been to Malaysia so I enjoy seeing it through your lens.

  40. Spectacular images from Malaysia. And the flowers and that creature so well captured. You are so talented in creating these 'gallimaufries!
Thank you, Veronica! Happy WW and a fine week!

  41. The color of the Peregrina is wonderful, dear Veronica!
On the subject of "Locust or grasshopper?" I can only say that in the German language there is only one word for both - namely HEUSCHRECKE. So it can't be important to distinguish them ;-)
Of course I can see the mosque from the balcony of your son's apartment. But what particularly fascinates me are the different settlements with larger and smaller houses. It looks like toy towns from above...
We also played hopscotch when we were kids. Funny that some games exist all over the world.
    All the best
    and have a wonderful time!

  44. You take the prettiest flower photos, and you even got a picture with the insect on the flower. I liked hearing about your childhood days. I had some really good ones too, and I also played outside with friends all day until it was time for supper. Hopscotch was fun, and Yes, life was so much simpler then, I agree.

It is our Thanksgiving next week, and I'm thankful for blog friends like you.
