Whispers of history in my hometown Ipoh
The name "Ipoh" is believed to have originated from a local tree called the pohon epau or pokok ipoh (scientific name: Antiaris toxicaria). This tree is native to Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia. The sap of the Ipoh tree is poisonous and was historically used by indigenous people, particularly the Orang Asli, to coat the tips of blowpipe darts for hunting.
Here’s the literal translation from Malay:
- I: Ini = This
- P: Pekan = Town
- O: Orang = People
- H: Handsome = Handsome
It's a humorous take, not the actual origin of the city’s name but a playful way to celebrate Ipoh’s charm!
Nostalgia
This quaint, nostalgic shop echoes the charm of Malaysia's past. Large glass jars and vintage tins contain an enticing array of snacks reminiscent of the sundry shops that once flourished, selling beloved biscuits from my childhood.

Take care.
This is a beautiful series of photos.
ReplyDeleteThe Zaanse Schans is very familiar to me, I have been there a few times.
The AI mice are cute again and the food looks delicious.
Greetings Irma
Interesting information about the Ipoh tree. I also enjoyed the architecture of that beautiful archway located in your home town.
ReplyDeleteNice photo-report about those typical Dutch shoes :-) Great post!
Have a nice November, Veronica.
Post script: huge congrats to your husband, who graduated with his PhD in philosophy on the 19th of October 👨🎓
DeleteThat sign about the literal translation is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI love the translation!
ReplyDeleteI also like the way they decorated with clogs. My heritage is Dutch and I live near Holland MI, where there is much about the Dutch history.
Congratulations to your husband. What a great accomplishment!
I like Dutch clogs. Congratulations to your hubby!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations with your husband, Veronica! Dutch clogs are well known over the world. Your AI mices are so sweet, and I just love them!
ReplyDeleteHave a great November!
A wonderful selection of photos again. The food all looks very enticing. The old buildings in Ipoh are remarkable, too. I always love those little mice, especially the graduates. Congratulation to your husband on his PhD. Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeletevery very good photos, have a nice friday:)
ReplyDeleteCute, thanks for your sharing
ReplyDeleteDearest Veronica,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your husband for getting his PhD in Philosophy!
Fun pictures of the Zaanse Schans and yes, I've worn wooden shoes when I was 3 years old, with a leather strap over the instep. Still have them and my Uncle did paint them neatly for me.
Thought that Pekan meant week and not city. Kotah is city...
Hugs,
Mariette
Your pictures never fail to delight! I never realised my clogs were made by mice!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a town of handsome people! (And Smart Ones, too -- three cheers to your husband!) I can't say the wooden shoes look comfy but certainly look pretty! You might know this, but you are now showing up as a no-reply blogger. I realized I am too (thanks for your visit) and I don't know how to fix it, but thought I'd let you know!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your husband, Veronica! That degree represents hard work and determination, for sure. Love your mice, as always. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteIt is very nice to see so many interesting things and places. The mice are excellent tour guides!

ReplyDeleteAs usual, the AI mice take the show. They are adorable getting their diplomas. I like the blue arch in your hometown too.Very entertaining post. thanks.
One of the teachers at a school I work at is Dutch. He has a pair of wooden clogs in his classroom. (I believe he uses them when the class gardens, but he also might just show them off.) And by Dutch, I don't mean of Dutch descent. He actually grew up in the Netherlands and moved here as an adult. (He married a local woman.)
ReplyDeleteI love the glass jars filled with snacks. I love going to candy stores that have candy in glass jars like this. Great pictures.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos. I love the colorful clogs.
ReplyDeleteWish you a very nice weekend
Lovely food
ReplyDeleteSiempre me gustaron los sucos y cuantos frascos. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteLove the colours and the sceneries. The food too
ReplyDeleteLovly sceneries :D
ReplyDeleteOh friend, I just love that wonderful collection of large glass jars and vintage tins! I'd love a peek inside them all.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your husband for completing his PhD in Philosophy! That's a big accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI love the rows of snacks in clear jars, and the arrangement of ingredients for the hot pot. Beautiful!
What a fascinating blend of history and photography! It's intriguing how the name Ipoh connects to the local flora and indigenous practices. The use of the Ipoh tree's sap in traditional hunting methods adds a rich layer of cultural significance to your hometown. Thank you for sharing these insights!
ReplyDeleteI just shared a new post; you are invited to read. Happy weekend!
Congrats on your husbands PHd.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!

Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Enjoy your day!
DeleteLiebe Veronica,
Ipoh looks like a charming place. Congratulations to your husband. Getting a PHd is a major accomplishment. Love the mice! ☺
ReplyDeleteYes, the Dutch clogs look delightful, but it seems like they would be hard to walk in. Such a wonderful accomplishment for your husband to receive his PhD. Not sure if you know this, cause I am a new blog friend of yours, but Nel received her PhD in English. She is an English Professor at the College. The quaint shop with the glass jars looks interesting. Would love to go in there and browse. That is a cool photo of the arched entryway in your hometown.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have pleasant November days, my friend.

I hope you have a great day!

ReplyDeleteY Muchas Gracias por tus deseos Verónica.
Buena semana.
Un abrazo.
Adding my congratulations to your husband on his degree. That is quite an achievement and I wondered if he is a university instructor. And, if you have mentioned earlier, my apologies, Veronica Lee, at not knowing. The translation for IPOH was humorous. I enjoyed seeing the hot pot foods. The wooden clogs just look like they would be uncomfortable to walk in, maybe I am totally wrong?
ReplyDeleteMy congratulations also for your husband. Philosophy is a quite a complicated road. Lovely mosaics, in your style. And "Whispers of history in my hometown Ipoh" is such a beautiful idea. I hope these buildings will survive.
ReplyDeleteHappy WW, dear Veronica! Hus and blessings!❤️😘
Congratulations to your husband. Lovely photos and cute AI images.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your husband. Hugs.

ReplyDeleteDear handsome woman from Ipoh ;-),
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your blog post - and again your cute little mice on all their adventures!
@ Zaanse Schans: I think I was there too (in the 1980ies). I brought a pair of those Dutch Clogs (in my shoe size) with me. And I'm not entirely sure, but I think there's a photo in my mother's travel archive that shows her in front of the same dark brown painted clog shop
Congratulations to your husband on his doctorate in philosophy!
All the best from Austria, Traude
