Just a rojak of photos 📸
Rojak
noun
a mixed salad of fruits and vegetables, drizzled with a piquant sauce made of prawn paste and topped with chopped peanuts.
adjective
In Malaysia and Singapore, "rojak" is also used as a colloquial expression for an eclectic mix, in particular as a word describing the multi-ethnic nature of Malaysian and Singaporean society in both countries.
Rojak |
Costus fissiligulatus (African Princess)
We had been patronizing this restaurant, renowned for its claypot dishes, for many years. The food is good, but the owner, not so much. She is always brusque and impatient. During a recent visit to the restaurant (our last, as it turned out), she made a mistake with our orders. "Excuse me, but this is not what I ordered", I said very politely. Instead of being apologetic, she became rude and defensive. Before I could get in another word, she dismissively barked, "It's your mistake, not mine!" I was speechless, but in no mood to argue. So, we just finished our meal and vowed never to return again. Ever!
Even if the food in a restaurant is fantastic, would you go back if the owner is obnoxious?
Hello, Veronica,
ReplyDeleteI'd like to taste that salad of fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, there isn't any Malaysian restaurant here in Rome and its surroundings.
Sorry to hear that the restaurant's owner was very impolite! If the owner were to get retired, you would return there again :-)))
Have a nice and sunny weekend,
G
Lovely food, I would like to tasyte that rojak! If people are unfriendly like that, I would not go back again. Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteI would never have gussed that coconut drink stand!
Since I actually worked in the food service industry many, many moons ago, the one thing I cannot abide is rude service. What happened to "the customer is always right"? Thanks, Veronica, for your photos and reflections here. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteThat African Princess flower is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe food would have to be amazing to put up with a terrible owner. I'll forgive a nice owner lots of mistakes. But that attitude? Yeah, I'm sure you'll find a much nicer restaurant elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteThe food look just fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThat is a tough question but probably not.
ReplyDeleteFood looks great. I love foods with peanuts.
ReplyDeleteHow pretty the African Princess flower is! And how delicious the food. No, I probably would not return to the restaurant where I was treated rudely.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flower.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame the women was so rude, I wouldn't go back again either.
I have never seen the African Princess, but it's very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMany hugs.
The food looks really delicious, too bad the owner was so rude, so I never went there again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful flower the African princess is, really beautiful.
I enjoyed your photos.
Greetings Irma
I am surprised that you kept returning, even though the owner was so rude. Good food only counts for so much. She has now lost your business and if she displays the same attitude to others she will lose theirs too. It's an odd attitude for a business owner. I wonder what she would say about it all?
ReplyDeleteI've never found another rojak dish like the one I had in Penang years ago. It was so good. Ditto Hokkien Mee. Maybe my tastebuds have changed over the years.
ReplyDeleteWhy pay obnoxious restaurant owners? Or wait for hours in line? No matter how good it is, I refuse to join in.
Gigantesco il fiore della principessa.
ReplyDeleteBuon fine settimana.
Thanks Veronica lee for explaining the term "rojak" and the food looked delicious. About the restaurant you mentioned, the owner certainly would not have my business and unlike yourself, I would not have stayed if the order was incorrect and the service so rude. You were much kinder.
ReplyDeleteThe food, as usual, looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteYou made the right thing: no more lunches in that restaurant.
Have a good Sunday.
I've never heard of rojak. It sounds so delicious!
ReplyDeleteYour food photos make me hungry - those clay pot dishes look so delicious.
ReplyDeleteI once stopped going to a breakfast place that I had really liked when the owner behaved like a jerk to my friend and me. We have never gone back. And Karma did its job - the establishment went out of business. I guess we weren't the only ones who didn't like his behaviour.
So nice flowers, thanks for your sharing..
ReplyDeleteGostei de ver estas belas e deliciosas fotografias.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e boa semana.

Veronica,
ReplyDeleteThe closest I've come to Malaysian food, at least in appearance, is Chinese cuisine and your foodie shots always make my crave it. How similar are the two? That business owner was terrible. It sounds like she got what was coming to her since she's no longer in open. I have to wonder if her sour mood was due to a declining business. That's no excuse. Every person should strive to be polite and kind always regardless. Had I been in your shoes, if the food was good I might give the restaurant another chance. I probably would have left very little to no tip. However, since it was the owner who had a poor behavior then tip or no tip would not have changed her attitude. How sad!
I would absolutely stay away if the owner is rude.
ReplyDeleteLove you throwback picture from San Francisco.
I've never had Malaysian food - this looks like it would be quite a treat!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing at https://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2023/06/power-tower-nearer-and-clearer.html
Goodness, the food looks great.
ReplyDeleteThe Costus is such a beautiful flower. I also loved the adorable photos you shared from San Francisco. I hope to visit there myself this summer.
ReplyDeleteI love the Africa princess, thanks Veronica.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely photos I enjoyed them as always especially the food heheh! :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a gallimaufrytastic week 👍
The food looks great, really, but we sure would never go back there either. The scenery around the countryside sure is pretty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool coconut drink stand. I would have never guessed that. I always enjoy seeing your old travel photos. Is that you in the picture? You know, my hometown is only about three hours from San Francisco, so I've visited often. I'm so sorry you had a bad experience at the restaurant.....especially when the food is good and you've eaten there for years. The African Princess flower is lovey as ever.
ReplyDeleteI hope the June days are good ones for you. It started off rocky for me, as I lost all my photo files! But it gives me a chance to take new pictures, new adventures. ; )

A shame the women was so rude. I wouldn't go back again either.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
No I would not go back to a restaurant where the owner is so rude. The wrong order is a big mistake. I used to go to a small local diner because of the food and the nice people. The owner retired a few years ago; I still miss him and his daily specials.
ReplyDeleteYou did the right thing Veronica "Vote with your feet" is the only way to hit back at these obnoxious people.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing beautiful photos with us. anyway, i like your blog. I followed you, hope you follow back. Thanks.

old photos in San Francisco are interesting...great.
ReplyDeleteI would never go back to a place where the owner was rude either! She will surely lose all her customers with that attitude.
ReplyDeleteFotos incríveis e pratos deliciosos. Obrigado pela visita e comentário.
ReplyDeleteLuiz Gomes.
Mom says it is scary that photos from the 1990's look so old, it means she is getting old and she doesn't like that.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteLove the San Francisco photos. Sorry the owner of the restaurant was so rude, she made a mistake and should have been nice to her customers. The flower is gorgeous. The coconut drink stand is cute. Thanks for sharing your post and for the comment. Take care, enjoy your day and week ahead.
Beautiful.

Of all the places I visit I sure love coming here to see all the delicious food.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Veronica. ♥
What a beautiful flower!
ReplyDeleteI didn't guess what the yellow thing is! Very interesting stand of coconut drinks!
As for the incident in the restaurant, no matter how good the food is, if the patron gets into a fight, I won't come back to the restaurant!
My English is not very good, I hope you understand!
The salads are making me hungry as they look delicious. No, I wouldn't go back as she might be the kind to spit in your food if complaint is made. She was very rude, and probably loses lots of customers so don't blame you for being last time.
ReplyDeleteNo way I'm going back if the owner is obnoxious. I guess her response was undeniably her mistake since she lost a repeat customer. I'll never understand why some people are so nasty.
ReplyDeleteRojak has a nice sound too! The coconut drink stand is so cute.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately some restaurant owners forget that they are in the service industry.
...I love the African Princess!
ReplyDeletefoods looks delicious....! especially love foods with peanuts.. thanks for sharing.

You make me hungry
ReplyDeleteThe food looks super delicious :-)

I like to try traditional local foods. Rojak looks so delicious. Sorry to hear about the response of the owner of the restaurant despite you loved foods. I wouldn’t return either.

Beautiful blog
ReplyDeleteI learned a new word, Rojak, and a new food. I love your 1990 vintage photos. Digital cameras are wonderful and all that but I really love old film photos.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, if a restaurant is good enough I will tolerate rude service and owners.
No, I would not come back there. The good food would be not enough
ReplyDeleteto come back there! I agree with you!
Never heard about rojak. I love the images from your archives.
And the Princess is magical!
Happy Today, dear Veronica! Hugs!😘❤️
Dear Veronica, I like the word Rojak very much in both ways 😊. I hope to taste the Rojak dish and get to know the society's eclectic mix. (There might be a chance we will go to Singapore next year... Hope so!) I love your San Francisco tram photo - it brings back fond memories! Hihi, I wouldn't have recognized the coconut drink stand as such 😁! Your food and plant photos are wonderful again.
ReplyDeleteAll the best and have a nice June 🌻🐝🦋!

Your blog always gets me so hungry.
ReplyDeleteNo I would never go back to a restaurant if the service was this pathetic. Food carries energy and eating at a place where the owner is so impatient and rude would not top my list. Though out of sheer patience I might give her a chance in compassion, knowing she is human and she must be in so much pain to act hurtful.
If even that doesn't work, its a complete no-no.
We eat to nourish ourselves and our souls, why would we waste it on those who dont vibe with ours. :)
Just my two cents.
Loved the Venus fly trap image in the new post.
You take care my dahling friend.
I miss my Malyasian and Singaporean food soo much!
I think I would go back - but call the manager and ask for a different server/waiter and let them know how you were treated. Then I would look at her and on the way out make a rude finger motion...lol
ReplyDeleteWow, how rude! That's no way to conduct a business. I probably would not go back either.
