Autogrill

Autogrill Sebino Nord
Many of our pit stops during our long road trips in Italy were at an Autogrill. Although Autogrill is the name of a large catering company in Europe and North America, it has become a proprietary eponym synonymous with all Italian highway rest stops among locals and foreigners alike.

 Autogrill Chianti

Autogrills are nothing like the rest stops I know in my corner of the world — these are true-blue restaurants! It's kinda like restaurant meets convenience store meets Italian grocer.

The range of breads, pizzas, focaccia, brioche, and croissants in Italy is overwhelming.
It is a little known fact that over 350 types of bread originate from across Italy.

FUN FACTS
  •  Italy has more rest stops than any other country in Europe.
  •  You only have to drive about 27 km on average from one Autogrill to another.
  •  There are over 600 Autogrills in Italy.

  5. Dearest Veronica,
A lot has changed since we lived and worked there in 1989 but those Autogrills are a very clever concept!
The enormous variety they offer to the tourists passing through is unique.
You managed to capture that in an excellent rapportage.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  12. Great to see you are still writing a post about your holiday in Italy, Veronica. You mentioned Autogrill, which is listed on the Milan Stock exchange. Autogrill is controlled by Dufry AG, which is a Switzerland-based retail company engaged in the travel retail sector.
Easy to see you and your family enjoyed the typical Italian food served by Autogrill :-) thank you for sharing such info!

    Have a nice weekend!

  24. All those rest stops make it sound like the kind of country we should visit at our age (LOL)!!! The Autogrill chain restaurants sound like ideal stopping places for people on a roadtrip too (not kidding about that!). Thanks for sharing this interesting part of your travels... I like seeing the historical and beautiful that you've showed in other posts of course, but it is fun to see the ordinary every day sort of thing also! (just like when we travel).

  34. Who knew that Italy was such a haven for travelers with the Autogrill and that Old West sign was fun to see, Veronica Lee. The amount and variety of foods was amazing and certainly I would stop at one of these given the chance.

  39. I could only dream of a rest stop serving up fresh Italian style pizza while driving through California or the rest of the southwest. That kind of food would make a road trip extra tasty for sure!

  40. Stop it Veronica, you're making me very hungry! I am a serious fan of bread, a product I always search out for local varieties during our trips abroad. At the moment our local baker is selling a seriously good and crusty spelt and honey loaf.

  41. I wish the rest stops in the US were only half as nice as the Italian - fresh good food and so many other delights.

  42. Dear Veronica, when I just read your headline and saw the first photo, I was amazed: "Well, is there also "Autogrill" in Malaysia???!" But I quickly recognized my mistake πŸ˜‰.
Of course I know these restaurants from our trips to Italy, but we haven't been to one for a long time. Years ago they were rather uncomfortable and didn't offer a very interesting range of dishes. We Austrians are a bit of snobs, because we have such particularly good motorway restaurants ourselves - but as I can see from your photos, in Italy they are now trying very hard and it looks really delicious in the Autogrill. Good to know when we come back to our neighboring country Italy.
All the best, a happy end of March and a good start into April!
    Hugs, Traude 😘

  44. Here we have "Food-and-Tank-Stopps" but not so many and so often at the highway ;-)
I wish you a nice April and sent best wishes from Germany

  45. I guess they like their food in Italy. It doesn't really look like a health food chain, though.
