The housefly hums in the key of F. The common housefly, although it lacks vocal cords, hums by flapping its wings about 190 times per second. We don't hear the individual flaps, but a low level humming noise in the key of F major.FROM THE TRAVEL ARCHIVES

MYTH BUSTER
Simply heating alcohol, or any other cooking liquid, does not make it evaporate as quickly as rum cake in an AA meeting. The food has to be cooked for about 3 hours to fully remove all traces of alcohol. A study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Nutrient Data lab confirmed this and added that food baked or simmered in alcohol for 15 minutes still retains 40 percent of the alcohol. After an hour of cooking, 25 percent of the alcohol remains, and even after two and a half hours, there's still 5 percent of it.

Hi Veronica! As always, your photos are gorgeous. I love the look of the food, it makes me feel hungry! I was fascinated by the Hindu mythology of the four elephants standing on the back of a turtle and holding the world. I will look up more information about that. I always love your photos. They are so clear and vivid. The asters are so beautiful and one of my favorite flowers . The turtle is in its habitat is wonderful but the pic of the house fly is quite extraordinary. He almost posed for you.

ReplyDeleteI like how Terry Pratchett adopted the idea of the world on the back of four elephants on the back of a turtle for his Discworld. I suppose that's cultural appropriation, though, and should be frowned on.
Those big teeth are scary. As it is Spring here we are seeing a lot more flowers blooming but I'm not looking forward to flies in Summer.

How lovely to see those colorful asters - they are my birth flower. I would probably get lost in the chocolate store and never be seen again if we had one like that around here - hah! Those teeth!! I don't think I'd be watching that movie as I scare too easily LOL Great photos of everything as always, thanks for sharing them. Would love browsing in there. That's a great photo of the house fly. They are pesky things though, aren't they? Don't like them in my house. What a fun dragon for the people to see. That food looks rather yummy Veronica. I do like slow cooked food but rarely add alcohol, even less so now I read your information. perhaps a drop or two of brandy in a beef stroganoff is OK though?

Beautiful asters, and delicious looking food. That was news to me about alcohol not burning off quickly. It does add another layer of flavour to a dish, though.

ReplyDeleteLoved the fly and the turtle and the myth. I have wondered about the frequency of bee wings myself and even started to record some bees. I never followed through, though.
ReplyDeleteYou really have to tell Food Network about cooking with alcohol. They keep telling us the myth about it.
Hainanese Chicken was such a personal favourite back when we lived in Singapore. Oh! missing it so very much now. And those cucumber slices that go with it.

ReplyDeleteHello, All the food looks appetizing, and I learnt about the slow cooking of food with alcohol. It's usually added to tenderise whatever is cooking, but not really necessary if one allows enough time to slow cook it. Anyway I never use wine. but prefer mine in a glass! :=) The Fly information is very interesting, and the Dragon looks fierce. I well remember visiting those chocolate shops in Brussels, and those cholates were so delicious. Lovely photos and a good read.
