Wordish Wednesday - Dubai's Pink Taxis


Unsure where the taxi stand was upon our arrival at the Dubai Airport, we sought the assistance of an airport personnel, who, to our surprise, directed us to a stand where several ladies in pink uniforms were waiting in front of a row of pink cars! Next to the pink cars, were a row of red-topped taxis.

These pink taxis, driven by ladies, are intended for female passengers and families while the red ones are for men.

I am so loving this concept! I wish we had the same system in our country. Imagine traveling solo and arriving in a foreign land at an ungodly hour. Doesn't the thought of hopping into a car driven by a male stranger to some unfamiliar place scare you?

With her permission, I took this picture of our lady driver who was from Sri Lanka.

    Pink taxis...sexist or what? Still, if wasn't enforced by law that I (being female) could only ride in the pink ones, I think it is a concept that would sell here in North America too. I wonder who will be the first cab company to cash in on this idea?

    wow thanks for sharing. We don't have this here in S'pore but in Japan there are some train cabins just for ladies during peak hrs.. very useful :)

    That's really cool! I can see on the side it says, "Dubai Taxi Corporation." and "Ladies Taxi."

    It's so crazy how they do things other places that work better. I remember when I lived in Georgia, they had the DMV at the grocery store. It was so nice. I went and got my drivers licence, while my husband went grocery shopping. Now that I'm back in Nebraska, we have few DMV buildings around. It's always filled with lines to!

    That's great! I love that the color pink is "recognized" as female there! In different cultures you never know what might be different. And you're right. I would be more comfortable getting into a female driven cab. Thanks for stopping by the Sit and Relax hop.

    I love learning about other cultures. I agree, it would be nice to have a female taxi driver when flying into places late. Interesting post, I love to learn about places before I go.
