Day 3—Truffle hunting in Kalambaka
Meet Benfra, our truffle dog, with her trainer. Benfra is the name of an Italian company renowned for its excavators. What a perfect name for a truffle hunter!
THE FUN BEGINS
Venturing into the oak forest
Benfra looking for her reward in her trainer's pocket
We were told that Benfra doesn't receive a treat unless she genuinely uncovers a truffle—she occasionally deceives her trainer by digging a hole without actually finding a truffle and then insists on her reward!
Following the hunt, we were taken to the "kitchen," which turned out to be outdoors.
Fruits of Benfra's labourAlexandra preparing a pasta meal with wild mushrooms and the truffles gathered during the hunt.

Clever dogs! The souvlaki looks great!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that dogs can find the truffles. Very nice museum, Veronica.
ReplyDeleteMany hugs.
What nice pictures of the day looking for truffles.
ReplyDeleteIt's really great that dogs can smell this.
The food looks delicious too.
Greetings Irma
I've heard of truffles, but I never really saw one. What an interesting outing. The dog is adorable and so clever that he is trained to find truffles underground. Looks like a fun day with a good meal at the end.
ReplyDeleteWhat a unique experience! Hunting truffles with a dog is no everyday experience. You have enjoyed a good meal too.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend and thanks for sharing.

Seems like a wonderful experience from start to finish. Great day!
ReplyDeleteI had heard of dogs being trained to hunt truffles, Veronica, but have never seen one in action. What a great adventure you all had! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteDearest Veronica,
ReplyDeleteMeteora region has a lot to offer. That truffle hunt was excellent and aside from pigs being used to dig them up, this is a clever way. Maybe that stray wanted to become educated?...
Yes, those black truffles do live in symbiose with oak trees and it is the main reason that they cannot be grown commercially. They need a certain type of soil and all that in symbiose with the oak trees.
The museum is interesting as well.
And the food prepared on site looked yummy!
Hugs,
Mariette
What a fun experience! I know how special black truffles are and so delicious in an earthy savory way. Every time I visit your blog I want to eat every food your post--it all looks sooooooo goooood!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! The food looks great - really the fruit of your labours! Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie

ReplyDeleteWhat a place, what a trip
ReplyDeleteHello Veronica :=)
ReplyDeleteSorry for the delay in getting back to you and thank you for your reply. I shall of course visit your other post and hope my comment doesn't get lost this time.
This seems like a fun outing Veronica, one in which I would love to participate. In fact I would like to go mushroom hunting as well, with someone who really knows the edible ones. The dog is very clever to have learned to find truffles. Your meal looks delicious, what a great outing you had with your family and thank you for sharing all the photos.
What a fun time and that food looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteLooked like fun I have never done that before thanks for taking us with you loved the photos :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a truffletastic week 👍
A treasure hunt!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteThe truffle hunt sounds fun. The dog is very smart finding out where the truffles are located. The pasta look delicious. The museum looks interesting, I would enjoy a visit there. Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead!
Oh, that was exciting, dear Veronica!
ReplyDeleteI have never experienced a truffle hunt, even virtually. I always thought truffle pigs were used for hunting - but apparently dogs are now being trained to search for them too. Benfra looks cute. I'm glad you enjoyed the truffle pasta! I didn't know that there was a mushroom museum either - it looks a bit like a fairytale land with all the bears, deer, birds and other stuffed animals.
Have a nice week and all the best, Traude

ReplyDeleteI'm glad I 'met' a seeker for truffles. He's quite special.
And you have very, very interesting photos.
Hugs and blessings, Veronica!
Happy WW!❤️😘
What a culver dog. And so crfaty
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous adventure! And the food looks delicious too. We visited Meteora in 2018, but to tour the hanging monasteries. I didn't know truffle hunting was popular there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever dog. And very crafty too in just digging a hole to cheat the system.
ReplyDeleteBit more challenging than your avarage shrooming for sure. They´re pretty pricy, hope they´re good for the price.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI love the cute dog, it is very smart too. The museum exhibits look wonderful.
Great photos and mosaics. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead.
We could easily be truffle hunters, but Mom isn't interested in finding them. It is a great job for dogs and can be trained just like any other nose work we do. Looks like everyone had a good time.
ReplyDeleteDear Veronica,
ReplyDeleteso an interesting Walk with Benfra - a truffle dog. Thanks for this Walk with me - I enjoyed it so much.
Greetings from rainy Germany

What a fun adventure truffle hunting. Oh the food. I ate some of each dish. You're more than welcome to eat my Thanksgiving meal too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥
...truffles are something that I have never eaten or know much about! I hope that you are enjoying your week.
ReplyDeleteVeronica Lee, admittedly, I have never sampled truffles, but know they are a costly delicacy. Watching how they were hunted by a dog was quite interesting. i wonder how many others find them this way? The outdoor meal looked interesting and sure it was delicious too. Who knew there was a mushroom museum, but then there is one for nearly everything it seems.
ReplyDeleteMy parents used to like to identify mushrooms, and I have eaten wild morels. I would love to have a truffle experience like you had. I didn't realize truffles looked so odd, though. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like such a wonderful day and the food looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteWow, now that is cool. I love truffle flavored french fries and pasta. Nice having a truffle hunting dog.
ReplyDeleteReally are incredible the habilites of these dogs for to found this hidden earth product.
ReplyDeletehaha! Looking for treats for just digging? So cute! (it must be difficult to refuse treats for just being cute. :D)
ReplyDeleteTruffle hunting and eating out in the woods sounds like a wonderful activity.
How fun to cook this outside. The pup is worth his weight in gold. :)
ReplyDeleteOoo wow truffle hunting looks so fun and then a pasta dish at the end? Sign me up! Too funny trying to fool the trainers for treat. Nice to also visit the museum. Looked it was full of interesting information and exhibits.

Wow, a mushroom museum.
ReplyDeleteLooks/sounds like a very fun day, although I'm not sure I would like the taste of truffles.
The truffle hunting dog is very cute.
Dogs are the best :D
ReplyDeleteThat hunt looks like quite an adventure and the pasta dish reward looks amazing! I'm sure you enjoyed this fun trip - thanks for sharing the photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful experience! I'd love to go along on one!
ReplyDeleteHi Veronica, Congrats on 100 Gallimaufrys! (or should it be Gallimaufries? 😊) I’ve always wondered what a truffle hunt would be like and now I know thanks to all your photos! Thanks for sharing! John
ReplyDeleteIt was delightful to read about Benfra. Now, I'm wondering what these truffles are? The mushroom pasta looks delicious, and that's a great picture of your son helping out. The history museum looks so interesting.....and that Owl! The Greek food on your road trip looks delicious. I love those meat on skewers also.
