People actually drink the water from the fountain!
Despite a fine of €250, people were still sitting on the steps!
As of 2019, a ban has been introduced to prevent tourists from sitting on the 135 steps, spanning from the Trinita de' Monti to the Piazza di Spagna. A hefty fine of €250 awaits anyone spotted using the steps as a resting place, enforced by whistle-wielding, high-vis-wearing officials patrolling the area by day.

According to our guide, there are more than 2000 piazzas in Rome itself! Italian piazzas, or squares, are the heart and soul of every Italian town and city. Big or small, humble or opulent, there is always something to admire — a fountain, a statue, an obelisk, a monument, a Christmas tree, etc.

The street was named after Babuino, the statue of Silenus, who was half man, half goat in Greek mythology. The statue was thought to be very ugly and compared to a baboon. It was thus nicknamed Babuino (Romanesco for "baboon"). It joins Rome’s other talking statues, where people leave pasquinades (nasty notes) directed at public figures. This is a tradition that has continued even today.

The Twin Churches
In Piazza del Popolo, two identical churches stand beside each other. The Santa Maria dei Mircoli and the Santa Maria in Montesanto are known as The Twin Churches because of their identical exterior structures.

Glad to see you enjoyed Italian icecream, Veronica :-) You visited the Roman Colosseum, which has been, and maybe still is, on lists of the seven wonders of the world. It's one of the greatest, long-lasting achievements of ancient architecture.

But so many places where we left our footsteps on that trip to Italy with best friends, the husband died on December 5, 2019... Sad but the fond memories remain.

Veronica Lee, you had an amazing week of sights and tastes (gelato) although I am sure you also had wonderful meals too. I was impressed with all the architecture, even the ruins. It looks like you had great weather for your trip, which is always a plus. I noticed there were so many other people at many of the places shown in this post. I didn't know you couldn't sit on the steps anymore. Must be getting too crowded? They were empty when we first went because it was raining. When the rain cleared and we returned, a couple of days later, it was a completely different place. People everywhere!! Artists, people resting, etc. Beautiful city.

Curious why sitting on the steps is banned!!! The one statue that would impress me most would be Julius Caesar. During from the fountain is safe?!??
ReplyDeleteOh yes, dear Veronica, we also walked around (almost) everywhere in these places. The only thing I don't know is Babuino. I am happy about the many beautiful memories that your post triggers. The fact that sitting on the Spanish Steps is now punished (severely!) hardly seems to impress anyone ;-) - it's probably more of an empty threat and too few penalties are actually pronounced...

There are so many grand buildings in Rome. Not sure I mentioned this to you, but this is the one place I've always dreamed of visiting. I hope to make it there someday. I understand the ban to prevent tourists from sitting on the steps. It's confusing for people walking up and down them. The fountains are so pretty, and didn't know you could drink from some of them. The gelato looks Yummy. And the pink baguette bag Christmas tree is delightful. Thanks for taking me along on your Rome trip. It's like I was there walking through the streets and seeing all the wonderful happenings. : )

Hello Veronica :=) Oh memories of "La Bella Roma". You brought back so many wonderful memories of when my late husband and I visited Rome many years ago with two of our friends. The architecture is magnificent and you took wonderful photos of all the places we visited, but I don't remember seeing so many tourists when we were there.
