Rice Dumpling Day

Last Thursday, 25th June, was Rice Dumpling Day aka Dragon Boat Festival.

More info about the festival here.

Pre Covid-19, we would be practising the tradition of dumpling exchange with our neighbours, friends and relatives. All the cousins would gather at my elderly aunt's house for a dumpling feast to savour the different versions of our fruits of labour.

For the first time this year, we decided to give the custom a miss. Instead, we stayed home to enjoy our store-bought dumplings.

The tradition of making these dumplings dates back more than 2000 years!

I can never get used to the element of surprise in uncovering these bamboo leaf-wrapped treats. You never know what 'gems' are buried in each parcel as the fillings vary from cook to cook.
Sweet, savoury, spicy, pillow-shaped or triangular, cream-colored and yes, blue(!), the dumplings are made of glutinous rice and packed with an assortment of fillings, from oysters to abalones to durians!

The *Peranakan blue ones are tinted with a natural dye that comes from the butterfly pea flower.

*Peranakan - A sub-ethnic community of Malay-Chinese ancestry.

  2. We are learning how to accept the things we cannot do this year and embrace what we CAN do instead. I think it helps to stay positive.

I'm glad that you got to celebrate with dumplings, even if that meant in a very different way than usual.

We are planning our annual trip to a cabin in a few weeks, but we will be staying to ourselves and avoiding the group gatherings. As sad as that is, at least we can get away for a little break.

  3. Oh my, this post made my mouth water! I adore dumplings and the thought of all those different flavoured ones sounded so good. However, I'm glad you put off that get together; better to be safe than sorry. Time for that again in the future.

  8. In Europe dumplings are made from flour and mostly put in a soup - not my favorite. Can't help but think that these, made from rice with other ingredients, are more flavorful than flower. Wish I was right there, to try them:) Many thanks for exposing All Seasons to different food, different customs and culture! Makes blog life so interesting. Have a insprrational week, Jesh

  19. Perhaps, when this is over, you will go back to your tradition - or maybe what you do this year will become the new tradition. Maybe there will even be a dumpling flavor created that will remind us and future generations of this time. Interesting video!

  28. Those dumplings look delicious! It is definitely hard to miss out on our traditions and get-togethers at this time. We "celebrated" Canada Day yesterday and it was strange not to go out and see the fireworks and partake in local festivals. One day we will get to the light at the end of this very long tunnel. :)

  29. Interesting. Kind of like a tamale from Mexico where you can get either sweet or savoury. - Margy

  33. Rice dumplings of this type are among my favourite treats, and the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf too. They are available here at a couple of Asian supermarkets, one quite close to our home. I was there yesterday, in fact. When Hong Kong was first turned over the China by Britain thousands of Hong Kong residents emigrated to Canada, and we have benefitted by an expansion of wonderful cuisine.

  36. Hugs, Veronica! I know how that feels. But at least you had a celebration of sorts. Btw, the dumplings look utterly delicious. I bet they tasted as yummy!!
It's a wonderful idea of sharing food with friends and neighbours. e have it in so many cultures. Just that the times we are living in won't allow us the joys of togetherness! Hopefully, there'll be many more in the years to come, Veronica.

Thanks for joining us last week, Veronica! Hope to see you this week too.

  39. Those look delicious and remind me of mini Tamales. Each Chef has their own recipe for those too. An exchange would be wonderful to try many different recipes and to share with Family and Friends, Neighbors and anyone else who wants to participate.
