I've just signed the petition. Hope you will join me too.

SIGN the petition on change. org HERE and let's make toothpaste come without boxes!!

Excerpt from Alan Theory's petition page.

Official campaign hashtag: #NOBOXTOOTHPASTE

Why does toothpaste come in a box?

Toothpaste is used by two-thirds of the world’s population on a daily basis. The box makes it more expensive for the makers and consumers, and the only thing we do with it is to throw it away.

Then why? what's the point?!

I did my research, and this is what I found: ¨Toothpaste comes in a box because it looks better¨.

That’s right, and If we consider each person using an average of 3 tubes per year, that´s more than 900,000,000 useless boxes a year only in the United States.

But, there are places where this is done differently, for example, Iceland. The same brands that sell millions of boxed toothpaste tubes in the USA, sell their product's without the box in Iceland. This means that it is 100% doable

Step1: Buy only Toothpaste that comes without a box, I know it´s hard, but if we all do it, it will be hard only for a short time. So stick to it.

Step 2: Tag on this campaign anyone you know that works in the government or in the toothpaste industry

Step 3: Spread the word, share this information so that in one year from today, we can buy toothpastes everywhere without generation billions of tons of unnecessary garbage

Sometimes it feels like we live in a society that is out of our control, but the truth is that big changes, start with ideas and motivation. Here is an idea, let's get rid of the toothpaste boxes. Are you in?

  1. I hadn't thought of the waste before with the boxes. We put ours in a recycle bin, but still that is a process to get it recycled. Definitely will sign the petition!

  4. I think the box protects the tubes in transit and sitting on the shelves. Seriously---I have seen what morons do in stores---kids unattended squirting this, squeezing that. No...I am okay with the box. Who knows what nut is going to inject something into the tubes? World is nuts these days. I pay for the box.

  5. I'm with Lin on this. There are so many that tamper with things that I'll keep the box.

    Have a fabulous day. ♥

  6. I would worry about tampering if it weren't in a box but there's got to be a way to make it tamper-proof without that extra cardboard.

  7. I hadn't ever thought about the box. My kids toothpaste is boxless. But after reading some of the above readers comments about tampering.. also something I had not thought about now I am even more conflicted.

  9. In a way I agree but also like some have said people tampering with them those tubes are easy to pierce even accidently, I usually throw the box in the reccycle bin. Having said that I am all for it if they could make it possible and safe.

    Have a boxlesstastic week :-)

  10. It's actually ridiculous the amount of packaging that is used unnecessarily! Hardly any of it even has a function!

  11. Not something that I would have ever thought about, but an excellent point. I'll be keeping this in mind #anythinggoes

  12. ok, I have honestly never considered the amount of waste this creates! I think coming up with a less wasteful way to make it tamper resistant and for sure, eliminate the wasteful box!

  13. I agree with your post. I have however seen a new toothpaste that is put into a box. As it's squeezed out, the box starts to flatten. There is no plastic used. It's easy to package, and stack.

This is what I'm talking about: https://www.downtoearth.org.in/coverage/out-of-the-box-41778 I'm a visual person. It's hard to explain.

  15. Veronica,

I'm sure the box makes for a nice presentation for toothpaste products and it certainly makes it easier to stack on shelves and it protects the product from damage and tampering. So, unless Alan has a workaround for Colgate and other companies, then I hope manufacturers do not do away with boxes for toothpaste just yet! :)

Thanks for joining my WW linky party, my friend have a wonderful Wednesday!

  16. This is a good point. I never thought about that before. Maybe it makes for easier stacking on shelves? I agree it is a waste. #bloggerclubUK

  17. Never thought about it, but it is true that we don't need that box.

  18. Oh my gosh, I was all for the "NO BOXES" thing, but now I don't know. Believe it or not I forgot about the tampering stuff. Guess it's been a while since I have heard about such stuff. I think everyone is right... and to actually steal a tube take it out of the box takes a bit longer and then to contaminate aughhhhhh worra worra worra "What to do", "What to do"??? Life is difficult enough then to have to worry about this too!!!! It's really something to think about I guess. THANKS! Have a great weekend!

  19. I can definitely agree with you..no box needed!

  20. I've noticed that when I take out the recycling, the packaging is hte biggest proportion. Actually for me, toothpaste is not the big culprit. Frozen food is. Now that I don't eat frozen food as much, my recycle has gone down to 25% of what it used to be. And the waste of from nonfrozen food (fresh veggies) can be thrown into the garden to make compost. Win-win. I do like the idea of the packaging becoming part of the product though so that we don't need the outer boxes on lots of stuff -- you just get the product, no box.

  21. So many things come in boxes that do not need a box nowadays. I hate to see all the waste in the world.

Thanks so much for sharing your post with us at The Wednesday Blog Hop. Hope you can join us today :)

  22. That's a good question, why does it even need a box? While mine usually end up in the recycle bin, not everyone recycles as much. The box does seem excessive because it isn't necessary to have.

  23. I hate all the extra packaging just so store shelves look better. It is unnecessary! #GlobalBlogging
