In memory of Hermie

Some of you may have noticed my new avatar. It's the picture of our beloved hermit crab, Hermie, who died last Wednesday. He was 10 months old. We inherited Hermie from my sister when she migrated to Canada. I knew his time had come, when I saw the strange look in his eyes. His limbs were stiff and frozen-like. He fell out of his shell as soon as I picked him up. I'm glad I was there for him when he died. We're saddened by his death and want him remembered in a special way.
I miss Hermie, especially his cute little 'pop-out' beady eyes , the wiggly feelers and playful pinches.
The empty shells - a sad reminder of Hermie I can still feel his presence especially in the quiet of the day when the boys are at school and hubby at work. I can almost hear him scuttling about in his aquarium as he clinked the empty shells around him. It was a trick he employed solely for me that meant 'come play with me' in crab language. It's hard to imagine that a critter so tiny, has its place in life and capable of giving so much joy.
  RIP Hermie

  2. Oh, how sad! I'm so sorry for your loss. I completely understand--I'm afraid to share that I've shed tears for fish, frogs, hamsters, and the rest of the menagerie. I think mom takes it harder than the kids because we are the ultimate caregivers when the kids lose interest. I'll say a special prayer for him.

It's funny how you feel his "loss" in the room, isn't it? Grace was at the vet the other day having a tooth extracted and her absence was palpable. His little bowl empty is so sorrowful....sigh.

  3. Veronica, isn't funny how we get attached to even the little creatures? They sure do etch their way into our hearts.

I'm sure he's scratching around up there in the grand aquarium in the sky. RIP Hermie.

I have Mr & Mrs. Crawfish, Yes, beautiful couple who ate my tropical crab. must have been a bitter fight over who loved Mrs. Craw fish more.

    I miss Mr. Pincher.

I hope the kids didn't take it to hard! =(

  5. Awww...what a beautiful tribute. I was recently thinking that two hermit crabs might be good pets for my boys but I really don't know much about them.

  6. Aw, I'm sorry about Hermie. My grown daughter had quite a few Hermit crabs, but one in partiicular (strangely, named Hermie!) was the friendliest and really loved to be held!

  7. Poor Hermie! So sorry!

I used to have lots of Hermit crabs when I was a kid. They were fun but I would get so grossed out when they were molting! lol You definitely get attached to critters tho - big and small!
