The Roti Man
Roti in Malay means bread
This display in a shopping mall brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood. Growing up in the 60s, waiting for the Roti Man as he made his rounds in our neck of the woods was the highlight of our day. He was our local hero. Kids would run out of their houses, yelling and waving for him to stop, excited to know what he had in store for us that day.
With an assortment of breads and colorful snacks dangling around his tinkered bike, the iterant Roti Man would rove the neighbourhoods, honking while pedalling his wares. Back in our days, our Roti Man wore a white dhoti and rode on a bicycle instead of a motorcycle.

A rarity these days, the Roti Man can still be sighted in villages and rural towns.

Navigating the busy highways is all in a day’s work for the Roti Man.
Alas, the Roti Man will someday be a relic of the past. Times have changed, and I am certain kids in this day and age would have no appreciation for the Roti Man. His honks would not evoke the same excitement they once did.
Kids today do not cherish such small joys as they simply do not know about them. Instead, they are consumed by their electronic gadgets and virtual world.

  3. Dearest Veronica,
    Lovely photos you show again.
Your Roti man memories are the same as our Ijscoman (selling all sorts of ice cream and we would NOT miss his bell ringing! https://www.pinterest.com/pin/375980268868997866/
Cleverly done on Sundays as the Parents would be home from work—to pay for the kids' treats.
    It is long gone...
    Lovely image from Heidelberg!
    Hugs,

  4. Judee from Gluten Free A-Z Blog: Your memories of the Roti Man are like my memories of the ice cream truck man. I do think young kids might still find it fun to get to pick a trinket. I still get excited when I hear the ice cream man playing his tune down the street -

  5. Loved this sweet kitty and your lovely description of the Roti Man, Veronica! Like Judee, I have fond memories of the ice cream man. What a treat when my mother would give me a quarter for an ice cream!

  8. Love your story of the Roti-Man. In my region it was the Egg-Lady. Once a week, the woman from a farm sells eggs out of her car.

  9. Such a cute kitty! A great shot of the church.

  10. Your Roti Man is like our Ice Cream truck! I remember the ice cream truck ringing its bell while driving real slow. All the neighborhood kids and parents too would run out to buy treats. I haven't seen that happen in quite some time. I sure enjoy seeing your images. Traveling is something I don't do much of so this is almost like being there!

  11. It will be really sad when the roti man makes his last ride. Modernity is not all it’s cracked up to be.

  12. The Roti man reminds me of the Good Humor Ice cream trucks that made the rounds in our neighborhoods years ago. Sadly they've become history but we enjoyed them when we were kids! Great photos, tfs!

  13. A few commenters have already mentioned the ice cream truck man. That's what your Roti man made me think of, too. That cat doesn't look too happy.

  14. That really is a cute kitty. The Roti Man sounds like a fun thing. Too bad he might not be around much longer.

  15. Love the cat's expression in the first picture.
Your roti man sounds like our ice cream truck. Interesting to see the difference in what is considered a treat in our different cultures. Roti is probably much healthier.

I've never heard of the Roti man, but I think you are right. He looks pretty fun to me.

  20. The Roti man, I love it. We have people who push refrigerated carts around that have snacks in them. We also have the ice cream trucks that come around and you can buy snacks and ice cream and stuff from them.

  22. I agree Veronica, that children seem to be lost in their electronic devices instead of life itself. When I was young we looked forward to the ice cream truck for a special treat.

  23. Good way to learn a living for the roti man, I do like that kind of bread. Hope the cat has a home to go to, looks like he/she needs a clean up.

  24. That is one angry cat. We used to have something similar to your 'roti man' in Pakistan as well. It was always exciting when he came by.

  26. Is that your cat? It's terrific -- great pix. I love that Heidelburg building. I wish we had a Roti man. Interesting observation about the kids these days. Too true.

  29. What a delightful and interesting story about the Roti Man. He has lots of goodies to sell, and I would have loved to seen them all. How wonderful you remember him coming around the neighborhood growing up. Reminds me of the ice cream truck, who would always drive through the neighborhoods and stop so we could get a Yummy ice cream treat in the Summertime. I seldom see the ice cream trucks anymore, but they are still around.

A happy August week to you.

  34. Hi Veronica. Life is certainly different than it was years ago. The Roti man sounds like he was always most welcome. It is sad to see traditions like this disappear.

  39. Mom was always amazed in her travels at how many countries have these people with a huge store on their bike. You can't even see the bike there is so much stuff, and they still manage to ride around. Crazy! The cat is kind of funny, not sure if he is just aloof or unhappy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Very cool bike! When I was a child it was the “snow cone man” the kids in my neighborhood would eagerly wait for. He had a convertible and a cooler full of shaved ice and bottles of different flavor syrups…as an adult, that seems kind of sus, but back then, everyone loved him!

  44. I didn't know about the "cat tax" and love learning that. And am sure I need to get out there and take some darling pictures of my neighbor's cats because I know there are times when I should be paying that tax. Love your pictures as always and learning about the Roti Man. While we obviously didn't grow up looking forward to a visit from the roti man, your thoughts about simple pleasures and what kids today don't know about can be said about here and pretty much everywhere these days I expect.
