FAKE VS REAL
Would you have guessed that 2 of these were murals on the walls of a restaurant?
FAKE
It's fascinating how this dull and lifeless mural on the wall in a restaurant suddenly became alive and vibrant in a photograph, almost like a portal to another world.
These photos were shot in my hometown, Ipoh
Las Vegas 1990
HAWKER CENTER
Dorothy @ https://thefrogandpenguinn.blogspot.com wondered about the name "hawker center" and asked to explain in a post as she did not see the food vendors in Gallimaurfy#95. Sandra @ https://greatgrannygrandma.blogspot.com, too, was curious about the name "hawker".
Ladies, I hope this answers your queries.
Hawker centers also known as food courts and Kopi Tiam are a common feature of Malaysian and Singaporean culinary culture. The term "hawker" refers to the vendors or street food sellers who operate these stalls.
The term "hawker" has historical roots in the British colonial era when street vendors and itinerant food sellers roamed the streets, selling their food from mobile carts or baskets. These vendors were colloquially referred to as "hawkers." Over time, as urbanization and modernization occurred in Malaysia and Singapore, many of these street vendors transitioned into more permanent stalls within designated areas, which eventually became known as "hawker centers."
Hawker centers are known for providing tasty and inexpensive food options, making them popular gathering places for locals and tourists alike. The affordability of the food aligns with the origins of street hawking, where vendors catered to people from various economic backgrounds.
This bowl of fish rice noodles only costs RM11 (USD2.35)
When it's just the hubs and me, it works out to be more cost-effective to eat at a hawker center than to cook at home.

WOW - those murals "got" me: they look pretty realistic ;-)
ReplyDeletewarm fish rice noodle make me hungry Kak Veronica, in here we called them bihun...i always mix bihun as item of soto...
ReplyDeletelike the beautiful mural and also adorable cat...happy friday Kak...
Food galore and lovely images. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI could easily imagine walking into those murals thinking they were real! As for hawker centres, I wish we had them here!
ReplyDeleteI miss the night markets in Asia. The food stalls and joints with a variety of great cheap eats
ReplyDeleteLove that mural! Night markets are fun.
ReplyDeleteDearest Veronica,
ReplyDeleteCute kitty you show us here!
Excellent explanation of hawker center.
Hugs,
Mariette
Beautiful series of photos.
ReplyDeleteThe food looks delicious again.
I enjoyed your photos.
Greetings Irma
I love the concept of hawker centers. They kind of remind me of food courts at a mall except there are no "deals" in a mall.
ReplyDeleteVery cute tax cat, Veronica! The paining on the wall is very nice done.
ReplyDeleteMany hugs.
I'm impressed that the murals can look so real, Veronica. You fooled me several times! And thanks for explaining about the origin of "hawker." I never heard of a "cat tax" until today. Blessings, my friend!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos! Jackfruit pudding looks interesting if only I liked jackfruit!
ReplyDeleteThe cat is beyond adorable, the pudding looks really delicious, and I agree that for two people it is sometimes more economical to eat out and more relaxing too.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos. The term 'hawker' is still used in England for people who are sellig things at a market etc. The murals are fabulous. And your food is great, and for so little money, wonderful. I would eat there everyday, for one person it's hardly worth cooking! Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteBeautiful series of photos. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation of hawkers. I can see how that might be a better place to eat sometimes. As for the murals, it is easy to trick the eye. It's what movies are based on, really.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great bunch of photos! But if I had to choose one it would have to be the cat—I'm a sucker for cat photos!
ReplyDeleteLindo gatito. Me dio ganas del postre. Te mando un beso.

ReplyDeleteA wonderful collection of pictures - and I've learned a thing or two as well!
ReplyDeleteOh, that cat photo! I really love the mural, too. It's perfect in that restaurant!
ReplyDeleteLove the mural, beautiful collection of photos and a cute cat. Night markets sounds like fun. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteFake or real? It’s difficult to tell apart when I’m not there in person. I like the atmosphere and affordability at the Hawker center. The fish rice noodle is tempting.
ReplyDeleteYoko
The Hawker Centers sound very interesting.
ReplyDeleteLove the murals and, of course, the cat.
Las Vegas: I visited the city long time ago: July 2000.
Those murals are lovely. Your throwback Vegas pics are great.
ReplyDeleteThe mural really does come alive.
ReplyDeleteI never knew that about a cat image! The mural is pretty and shows great depth. We have "Food Halls" here which is varied restaurants all in one place with a central eating area.
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic murals so clever would love to visit there :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a gallimaufrytastic week 👍
That's fascinating about the real vs murals and your photos really do make the 'fake' ones seem like portals into something very exciting. I've actually heard the word "hawk" used to mean "sell" or "vend" here in the states, so I had figured out hawker center even before you explained it the first time! We'd call it a food court now I suppose although I've never seen a food court that had meals that looked as good as home-cooked the way yours do. (Ours mostly would be fast food, not so good for you).
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing your fun photos from Las Vegas back in 1990. You won't believe how much different it looks now. I visited this summer to celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of cat tax is interesting and the murals are fine art!
ReplyDeleteNice post Veronica. I love the murals, real or pretend. Very clever. And thanks for the explanation about hawkers.
ReplyDeleteHello, Veronica
ReplyDeleteThe murals look real, well done. I love kitties and their photos. Las Vegas is a fun place to visit, great travel memories. The hawkers and food courts are popular here too. So many food choices. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead!
Nice post. The pudding looks yum.

I love the murals/fake corridors! <3
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, Veronica. :)
Your photos always make me feel very hungry, I've seen jackfruit only in cans here in the supermarket but I've never tried it.
ReplyDeleteWe still use the phrase "hawking their wares." Some houses still put the sign on their gates for no hawkers or canvassers. Those murals are so realistic.

Kind of made me feel like I've been there. Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI like mural paintings. They could change fabulous an old facade or a broke one. Lovely images. The kitty is so cute and serious... I did not know the term 'Hawker centers '. There are huge!
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed the food there!
Happy WW, Veronica! Hugs and blessings!❤️😘
That's a treat to get out and have the food cost less than a meal at home. And no clean up! :)
ReplyDeleteThank's for Information about Cat Tax - I don't know what this means, greetings form autumn Germany, hugs and blessings sent from
ReplyDeleteKirsi
Beautiful cat! Your photos always bring Mom back to all the time she spent in different Asian countries. You capture it all very well.
ReplyDelete...here a hawker is one who sells things! Veronica, I hope that you are having a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photographs and a beautiful cat. You know how I love your food. I'd be all over these stalls eating my way through. Delicious.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Veronica. ♥
that mural is awesome! I didn't realize it was a mural at first.
ReplyDeleteThe painted murals looks so real, don't they? I love that green entrance in the last photo. The jackfruit pudding looks good, and I've never seen that before. What a pretty cat this is. The Hawker center sounds like a nice gathering place to eat good food.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful October week.

These days we are all fooled by fake photos and stories and it's hard to distinguish between them, but I love all these photos and shopping places you've been to. Thanks for the peek into your world.
ReplyDeleteWonderful scenes, wonderful food! Thank you, I always enjoy what you have to share.
ReplyDeleteIt's like the cat is looking down on that jackfruit and weighing her dining options!
ReplyDeleteDear Veronica, the resident cat is adorable, she has such an attentive look. And the jackfruit pudding looks extremely delicious. Gorgeous, the mural "doors" - you really have to look very closely to see it and it makes the room look big and alive. We were in Las Vegas too, but 22 years later than you. A few casinos had probably already been replaced by that time. The hawker centers sound really interesting and reasonably priced - USD 2.35 for the bowl is a very fair price! (However, I don't know what the income ratio is between US citizens and Malaysian citizens. In Austria, even in very cheap snack bars, you can hardly get anything for less than 5 to 7 USD.
ReplyDeleteAll the best and happy October days

I was supposed to go out for Pho today, but stayed home. That bowl looks so good!
ReplyDeleteI love rice noodles, too.
ReplyDeletedifficult to distinguish between fake and real nowadays.....
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend
Thanks Veronica lee for the explanation and photos telling more about the hawker centers. I have heard the term "hawker" applied to those selling things, but didn't know it was also used to describe selling food. The prices certainly sound reasonable and unfortunately, it's not always less expensive to eat out than cooking at home, although it is often less effort.
ReplyDeleteThose murals were amazingly real and thanks for showing both the "real" images and the painted ones.
I love those trompe l'oeil paintings! And thanks for explaining more about hawker centers. I can not get over the affordable prices!
ReplyDeleteGostei de ver estas belas e deliciosas fotografias.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e boa semana.

The jackfruit pudding reminds me of the jackfruit jello a student made once for my ESL class and it was really good.
ReplyDeleteHello Veronica :=)
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your posts and learn something every time. I wonder how many people have been fooled by the murals and tried to walk through the portal. Ha Ha They are very well done, so it could be possible. The food you ordered looks so good and those huge food courts are wonderful when you can eat more cheaply than making a cooked meal at home. I wish it would catch on here.Beautiful cat, and beautiful pictures so colourful and full of life. I did know the word Hawker and associate it with anyone selling their wares.
Thank you for another interesting post.
All the best
Sonjia.
These are some amazing pictures...yummy food :-)
