MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD
Lor Bak
Essentially, Lor Bak is just meat rolled in beancurd skin and deep fried. The star ingredient is the Chinese five-spice powder, which consists of a mixture of star anise, cloves, cinnamon, sichuan peppercorn and fennel seeds. Lor bak is usually sold at stalls together with other deep-fried goodies such as prawn fritters, sausages, fish cakes, tofu, etc.
My mom-in-law makes the best Lor Bak.
Kolam is an ancient Indian art of drawing using colored rice grains or powdered rice to form symmetrical geometric patterns on the floor. The Hindus believe that a kolam at the entrance of a house will usher prosperity and harmony into the home. It is also believed that a kolam wards off evil spirits and diseases. 🪔

The Turmeric or as we also say in Dutch Curcuma is such a beneficial spice that I use daily.
Your food is always heavenly; you manage to bring me back to your part of the world with such wonderful vivid photos and the taste and smell I can remember—luckily I've had that opportunity to work and live there long enough.

ReplyDeleteGreat pictures of those angry looking clouds which bode of a brewing storm. I like the look of Lor Bak, it really does look delicious. I have heard of Kolam before from by blog friend Jeevan. It is a lovely tradition to make artistic designs in front of your doors to ward off evil spirits, and welcome into your home harmony and prosperity. The artist who made the large colourful design in the entrance of the large shopping mall is so talented. his precision work in his colourful design is awesome.

I think we would like Lor Bak too, it looks delicious. Making a Kolam is really a very special art, we saw quite a bit of it in India. But the ones you have shown are particularly artistic and beautiful!

Those clouds are gorgeous. I had never heard of kolam before we have always known of the colorful Hindu creations as a rangoli.

ReplyDeleteThose cloud images from your balcony are amazing, Veronica Lee, but the kolam creatures won out for amazingly intricate and beautiful. I wondered how long it took to create the one at the mall and if anyone knows how much rice was used and how the grains are kept in place. I am not a FB user or fan, so perhaps the answers are there.
