An expatriate friend once commented that life in Malaysia is like a never ending carnival. The Hari Raya Aidil Fitri and Mid-autumn festival are barely over and now Deepavali is just a week away! And to think that Malaysians celebrated the
Hungry Ghost Festival a month ago!
Interestingly, Malaysia is one of the countries in the world with the highest number of public holidays.
Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights is celebrated by the Hindu Community to symbolize the triumph of good over evil, the victory of light over dark.
Here's how Hindus prepare themselves for Deepavali.
Spring cleaning - Homes are given a thorough clean up. Besides the cleaning of homes and temples, Hindus also prepare themselves by cleansing their bodies and minds. Many among the devout fast, or observe a strict vegetarian diet, and spend hours during the preceding weeks in prayer and meditation.
The entrances to Hindu homes are decorated with fresh mango leaves and kolams (Indian floor art).It is believed that the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, will only enter a home that is adorned with a kolam.
The kolam or floor-painting uses colored rice grains or powdered rice to prevent evil entering the homes. It is believed to bring prosperity and harmony.
On the morning of Deepavali, Hindu devotees take a spiritual bath before sunrise.
Oil lamps are lit in Hindu homes on Deepavali morning. By lighting the oil lamps, the Hindus are thanking the gods for the happiness, knowledge, peace and wealth that they have received.
Devotees will head to the temple for prayers
