Tulips Against the Chill, Memories Against the Heat

Back in 2019 at the Keukenhof festival, I stumbled upon this striking arrangement of tulips by the fountain and couldn’t resist stopping for a photo. The morning was cold and misty, yet the flowers seemed to breathe life into the entire garden.

Coming from tropical Malaysia, tulips are a rare sight — usually imported at steep prices, and never in such abundance. Seeing them here, with people wrapped in coats and scarves against the chill — instead of the usual tees, shorts, and flip‑flops we wear to beat the unrelenting heat — felt like stepping into another world.

Even now, looking at this photo brings back the memory of that peaceful spring morning in Europe: crisp air, gentle mist, vibrant colors, and the quiet rhythm of visitors strolling through the gardens. A world so different from the humid heat of home, yet one that lingers in my mind like a cherished postcard. 🌷✨

  2. The photo of the tulips are very beautiful! The heat at your place must be terrible. We got 30 degrees last Sunday, and I felt really bad. We are not used to temperatures like that. I feel sorry for you, Veronica. I send you cool hugs! 🥰

  3. Beautiful photo of the Veronica tulips.
Here you see tulips standing in abundance in the fields in the spring.
It was 35 degrees here last Friday, you couldn't go outside, it was too hot, especially for people with lung problems like me.
    All the best, Irma

  5. Oh, how lovely—tulips.
That reminds me of the hit song "Tulips from Amsterdam." A thousand red ones, a thousands yellow...
And now I’ve got the tune stuck in my head, greetings from a realy hot Germany

  15. Those are great tulips. It's weird to be someplace cold when you're used to heat. (I'm in southern California, so we have fairly warm summers, mild winters.)

  21. You made me dream of crisp air. The heat wave in Europe is taking a break, instead of 40°C we have 30°C. I appreciate even the small steps :)

  22. We are having really hot weather right now which is not my favorite, so I wish I could somehow be that woman in your photo. Of course it can't happen, but those tulips and grape anemones are gorgeous.

  24. Everything is changing, including the climate in Europe. In recent days, we have witnessed heat waves that have broken all previous temperature records. Therefore, it is not surprising that people from tropical and subtropical regions are migrating to Europe.

Love this picture with the people walking by in their coats and scarves. You can tell it must be a chilly day. I wish you the best July days.

  41. Cherished memories are a wonderful part of life. Our tulip weather is long past and the humid heat of summer is upon us here in Tennessee. At this moment, a thunderstorm is loudly passing overhead. I see I have never followed you, so I'm remedying that now. Best wishes for a lovely weekend.

  47. Hello Veronica,

I live in North Holland myself and of course I know the Keukenhog. To my great shame, I really must admit that I have never actually been there myself 🫣. I live close to the most beautiful tulip fields and I think these tulips in this large pot are amazing to look at :-)
    Kind regards,

  51. What a beautiful memory you have of Keukenhof. I have been there a few times too, and although the flowers were lovely, my own memories are a bit mixed because I once became very unwell from the heat there. So for me Keukenhof is connected with both beauty and caution. Your description reminds me again how special it can be when the air is cool and misty — that sounds like the perfect way to experience it. 🌷

  52. After this last stretch of summer heat, those cool Fall mornings and evenings do sound pretty heavenly!! I actually grew up just north of Seattle. The area just north of me, Mount Vernon, used to have tulip fields that would go on for miles and miles. I loved going up there every spring to see them. It was truly a breathtaking sight to behold!

  53. Dear Veronica,

The sight of the blossoms is beautiful! 🌷 And I can certainly understand your longing for some cooling relief. Here in Austria, it's also been hotter than ever recently – almost 40 degrees Celsius. When I go to my air-conditioned gym, where I have a screen on the exercise bike showing me many of the most beautiful places in the world, I always enjoy being able to virtually cycle through snow-covered landscapes or past mountains with glaciers. It cools me down a bit, too.

All the best from Austria 🤗
