At first glance, we thought it was just another statue in the square. We walked past it without giving it much thought.
It was only when we came by the same spot a second time that we realised it wasn’t a statue at all — it was a busker, perfectly posing as a living statue.
This photo was taken at Ribeira Square, where the square is usually full of chatter, music, and the occasional sound of fado drifting out from nearby cafés. In the middle of all that bustle, he sat completely still, painted head to toe and blending into the street scene.
Tourists would walk past, hesitate, then suddenly laugh when he gave a small movement — maybe a tilt of the head or a slow mechanical wave — just enough to remind everyone he was very much alive.
And right behind him stood that bright red telephone booth, looking like a tiny piece of London dropped into Porto.
Quirky, playful, charming… totally Porto.
...with a crowd like that, you could miss seeing things!
ReplyDeleteOh my!!! How amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I thought it was a statue at first. It would have startled me if I walked past it and it displayed some movement haha. The square looks lively, filled with color and communication. Have a terrific spring week!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool! Glad you documented it and shared it!
ReplyDeleteCool!
ReplyDeleteThat's really fun!
ReplyDeleteWe saw several human statues when we were in New Orleans. So fun!
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool 😎
ReplyDeleteHe looks the part there sitting still. Good photo.
ReplyDeleteVery nice photos, Veronica! It looks really like a statue.
ReplyDeleteWow, he looks beautiful and so real!
ReplyDeleteWe have similar painted "statues" here in summer, but not often and usually they are painted gold or silver so everyone knows they aren't real. Your statue is much more realistic, looking like a real statue.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I have seen similar buskers before. They are always very entertaining. Lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteWow that was interesting-wondering how long he can sit there and not move
ReplyDeleteI think it's so impressive that they can sit still for so long without moving.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo, Veronica.
All the best, Irma
Wow, Veronica, I never knew about buskers, and this man is a fantastic example. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteLovely post, Veronica. He really seems a statue!
ReplyDeleteHow fun. They are so talented. I don't know how they can do this without moving.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ♥
The skill it takes to sit perfectly still... I do not know how they do it.
ReplyDeleteEin herrliches Foto liebe Veronica!
ReplyDeleteGroeten,
Ad
Oh that is so neat!
ReplyDeleteThat's really clever and. fun!
ReplyDeleteHe really does look like a statue. I wonder how he manages to sit still for so long and what motivates him to do that. Other buskers usually collect donations, but I'm guessing no one would be giving him anything if they thought he was just a statue.
ReplyDeleteUy parece una estatua. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteAmazing how they could sit still like that,,
ReplyDeleteSomeone's got too much free time.
ReplyDeleteHe seems a statue, indeed. Beautiful images.
ReplyDeleteGreetings
Very nice picture!
ReplyDeleteI invite you to visit my last post. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, you only notice that on second glance.
Hello Veronica :)
ReplyDeleteIf people are going to leave him a token of their appreciation he has to move sometimes to show he is a living statue or people will just ignore him. This is the first time I have heard about this, many thanks for bringing it to my attention.
All the best
Sonjia
Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥
Statue buskars seem to be quite popular these days as I've also seen many in public places. Some are quite remarkable in disguise and antics.
ReplyDeleteVery cool!
ReplyDeleteI've seen those statue people before, they are really clever, have a great week.

Very fun.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, I've only seen this once before and that was in Las Vegas. I don't know how they stand so very still for so long. This "cobbler" is very impressive, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteMany greetings!
ReplyDeleteI love stuff like that but I sure would hate it if it was my job!
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few of these statue like people, they are really amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe living statues are amazing. I don't know how they can keep so still.
ReplyDeleteHello Veronica,
ReplyDeleteIt's really great that you stopped by my blog and left a comment. I still need to reply to the comment, but I wanted to come take a look at yours right away.
Living statues can often be seen in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and I think that's really impressive of them. I wouldn't be able to stand or sit still for that long.
I wish you a very nice weekend.
I signed up to follow you right away.
Best regards, Helma
Hi Veronica!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog. I have seen these living statues in Stockholm and Rome. Sometimes they almost frighten you, when they start to move.
Have a lovely day /Marika
Thank you for visiting my blog. Just returning the compliment. Living statues are amazing. It must take great control and discipline to pose for hours on end.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how these people who pose as living statues can fool us. It's happened to me many times. It's always a surprise when you finally figure it out.
ReplyDeleteI saw once a man - statue. He was incredible how still he was.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these moments, dear Veronica!
Have a fine weekend!❤️😘

A delightful little street moment, and one of those scenes that rewards a second glance. The stillness of the performer contrasted with the busy square is what makes it so memorable, especially when the surprise breaks the illusion just enough to make people smile. Ribeira Square in Porto has that kind of character naturally, lively, layered, and full of small moments like this.
