I left my hometown for the bright lights of the city almost 40 years ago.
Although I regularly visit my parents who still live in the town I grew up in, I've been walking the same way I did before — rushing about on an errand and missing out the historic landmarks that tourists flock to visit.
Sharing the gems of my hometown that I always see but never noticed ....
Looking through the eyes of my phone...
Our very own Trafalgar Square |
That's our town hall in the background. Note the colonial architecture. |
The Birch Memorial Clock Tower |
Part of the neo-renaissance facade of the Hong Kong & Shanghai building — it was once the tallest building in town |
Heong Piah has a flaky crust encasing a sticky sweet filling made from malt and shallots |
You can read more about Concubine Lane here.
What a ฤฑnteresting places:) thanks for your sharing...
ReplyDeleteLove your hometown of Ipoh, Veronica. I looked it up on Google to get more info on it. Looked like a great place to grow up in! I would love to explore it if I ever visited Malaysia (I don't see that happening in my lifetime so I'm glad you shared it here on your blog).
ReplyDeleteThe pigeons though would freak me out. Not fond of those birds!
betty
That's a great tour through your hometown! I like watching pictures of colonial architecture.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed those beautiful murals: congrats to the author! Heong Piah looks a fragrant pastry. I would like to have it ... Unfortunately, there isn't any Malaysian restaurant in Rome.
Thanks for sharing these snapshots of your country, Veronica!๐

Great mural paintings!
ReplyDeleteYou had already made me put Malaysia on my wish list for travel and this post really adds to that. What an interesting town and it is fun to revisit our home towns with a camera -- makes you look more carefully at things you've taken for granted for years!! Sadly as far as my travel wish goes, there are so many places and so little time but it is fun to think about and really fun to learn about an area that was not at all known to me until your blog!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful what I see. It looks like a very peaceful place.
ReplyDeleteI like to see murals in the cities - are always a reason to smile.

I want to pretend that I didn't see the fragrant biscuits. ๐ Yummy!
You grew up in a very nice place, i'd like to try that flaky pastry.
ReplyDeleteIt's many years since we visited Malaysia, pre digital cameras. Your photos make me want to go back and to sample that Heong Piah - such an unusual filling of malt and shallots.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, you often miss the gems that are around your home area because they are always there, they are normal. Lately we have started visiting more sites around our area and it is rather fun. Thanks for the tour of your home.
