Star of the monsoon
I was told that rain lilies are nature's weathercocks to forecast monsoon rains.
Made of ground rice flour, putu piring cakes are shaped by special moulds into circular mounds. The moulds are first filled with a layer of rice flour. Next is a layer of palm sugar followed by another layer of rice flour. The moulds are then covered with pieces of cloth and placed upside down into funnel-like steamers When cooked, the moulds are removed and the cloth packages are collected from the steamers and unwrapped. The cakes are topped with freshly grated coconut and banana leaf squares before they are peeled from the cloths and turned over.

The Malay name for it is Cili Padi. Interestingly, Cili Padi is an idiom for someone petite with a feisty attitude, particularly a female.

I would love to see Stonehenge someday! The Malaysian street food looks delicious. I've had as hot as ghost peppers but nothing above that heat. My son grew them this summer and made his own hot sauce from them--just a drop is enough to spice up a dish.

It's amazing the way that different cultures cook the same food items. We have used those Thai chilis. As you say they pack a punch!

you have a great view from your balcony, ours looks out over the garden and grass. Stonehenge is on my bucketlist but need to win lotto to get there. your food is mouth watering, ever since I found I have filipino ancestry I've been getting more and more into their food, my favourite to make so far is home made chicken or pork ramen noodle soup.

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid Thai pepper is not for me. Jalapenos are enough for me. my husband likes it a little more spicy than me, he always buys a habanero sauce that he loves but is way too hot for me.
I was wondering if you had only recently been to Stonehenge. I would have been astonished in times of Covid ...) I was there a long time ago and a VERY long time ago (so a total of 2 times ;-) - I think 1977 and 1987).
The Taiwanese pork chops and putu piring both look delicious!

Star of the monsoon is so beautiful, Veronica Lee, and that view from your balcony was so amazingly beautiful with such colors in the sky! The rice cakes looked so good and the video was interesting to see the process. Now, if only sampling could be done online😋 Stonehenge is a place we would like to see, one day.

ReplyDeleteThat sky is wonderful. I have been to Stonehenge many times when I was younger. You could just go and walk among the stones back then with no restrictions. Now if I see it, it is because I am stuck in a traffic jam with everyone driving so slowly looking at the henge. We try avoid that road now.
