Batu Seremban/Fivestones
And one of our favourite games was Batu Seremban aka Fivestones, a traditional version of Knucklebones. Instead of bones or stones, we played the game with cloth bags filled with either rice, mung beans or sand.
I used to think that the game was native to Malaysia until I discovered that it is found in various cultures worldwide.
The game has many variations in rules and names; for example, gonggi (Korea), otedama (Japan) and anjukal (India) ...

Your photos always interest me, it's like a visit to the other side of the world I've never seen before! Beautiful flowers, wonderful food, what's not to enjoy? The game you mention reminds me of something I played as a child called "Jacks." It was played with a little rubber ball and metal "jacks" you picked up similar to your game.

I think the ginger plant is classed as noxious here but I can't remember if it's the same species however the crushed ginger is something I use in my cooking all the time. Must be the filipino ancestry.

Nice dinner, typical Japanese dishes. Satay looks like Japanese ‘yakitori.” There is a similar playground equipment in the nearby park in my neighborhood.

It's always a pleasure to see the foods, flowers, plants, and sky views in your area. The sky photo looks like a post card, so pretty. The grilled meat with peanut sauce looks delicious. Oh, that white Carnation is so pretty. You know, Carnations are one of my favorite flowers. It's sturdy and lasts a long time, and smells so nice. Our Carnations looks a bit different here. It sounds like you have fond memories playing the cloth bags growing up. : )

ReplyDeleteThe crepe ginger flower is so interesting, and the grilled met tempts me. Your children's game - here in the United States children, when i was growing up, enjoyed a simple game called jacks, which is played with 10 "jacks" and a small bouncing ball. I loved it but haven't played it in many, many years.

At 7pm and waiting for my evening meal, I could just murder a few of those satay sticks Veronica. Of course we have something similar that we call kebab, as I'm sure you know.

We played knucklebones but we called them Jacks, and they were little plastic things. I love your skywatch photo - it's beautiful and I have to say Street Satay is the bomb!!! Sooooo good!
