Just two days before our departure, our travel agent called to inform us that the trip was cancelled.
On March 9th, the government of Italy announced a national lockdown.
There is no refund for the trip, only a deferment . No date has been given.
We are still waiting for a response from our travel agent who is waiting for a response from the tour operator who is waiting for the airline who has suspended all flights until further notice.
It's a long waiting game...
It's a no-win situation for any party and everyone is a loser.
I'm not even angry, just frustrated.
Our Italian vacation is in limbo.
It's a torturous wait and at 58, I feel my life seconds numbering.
The corona virus has hit the pause button on my bucket list.
So many places yet to visit, so little time.

I hope this is all over soon. All our lives have been put on hold.
ReplyDeleteOh wow Veronica! But it was good that it was cancelled before you got there. What a nightmare if you were there and it got locked down! Shame too that you can't get a refund. Such a nightmare!

Coronavirus cancelled 3 trips I'd planned: to Washington DC, to a tour from the Grand Canyon through Arches National Park, and to the French Alps.

here in florida, mr wonderful and i used to do a lot of traveling, many trips being impromptu road trips over the weekend. i love traveling in a car...i can take everything i could possible need or want. i am going to be 68 in june and i feel i may never fly again, which i hated anyway. the only thing really on my bucket list was the florida keys. we have talked about what we would do. other travel, would we rent or buy an rv and hit the open road?

Ah, yes...BUT you are lucky that you weren't there and exposed to the virus, right? It's all in how you look at it.
ReplyDeleteI understand about the trip...I am sad that our lives will be changed by this and I may never travel abroad....but there is a lot to see in my great country too. I am trying hard not to think about the things I may not do, but instead focus on what we have done and what we can do. Otherwise, it is just too darn depressing!

Our third leg of our RV Snowbird Adventure to Arizona was put on hold. We were lucky to get all of our advance reservations refunded, but our airline reservation was only given back as a credit only good for a year. Hopefully we'll be able to fly back to Arizona before that time comes. We are on day 53, but who's counting. - Margy
ReplyDeleteIt's sad it had to be cancelled but on the other hand it's good I hope this doesn't last too much longer I think we have at least another 2 months yet.

We cancelled all our travel plans for this year. I can't imagine being in a hotel room right now. Just can't. We're all doing what we have to do.

ReplyDeleteWe have a beach vacation scheduled for June. Technically, we could probably still go since we drive there and it's open. But I don't know if it'll be safe or not. Waiting to see. Maybe 2021 we can resume our travels. The uncertainty of everything adds another level of angst. Hope you can continue to look forward to your Italy vacation one day.

I read somewhere that Sicily is offering 50% airfare to tourists who visit in the 2nd half of May. But I don't think it would be a dangerous bargain. Would be wiser to wait and watch.

ReplyDeleteYou are SO lucky it got cancelled in the nick of time. I wonder if people would still want to go if they could still see the virus as your earlier post shows. Fifty-eight is young. Have you seen all the non-narrated walking-tour YouTube videos of Italy and so many other places? They are wonderful and really put you in the scene from your chair at home.

ReplyDeleteI turned 63 on Sunday and don't feel my days are numbered. I went to Italy a very long time ago and envy you being able to go at some point. Maybe you can take the time to learn more about the places you'll be going and what policies are and will most likely be in place. How about brushing up on your language skills? I don't think you can be too prepared and it makes the trip so much more enjoyable.
We work so hard to save money for trips, and poof it all goes out the window with a virus. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteIn some way I was lucky, I didn't book any travel, because we sold our house and I had to find an apartment which I found and everything went smooth, the lockdown for me was even good ! Now we have to move so that takes time too, and enjoy our new apartment as the weather is nice it will be holidays for us this year ! Next year I will see, my clock ticks quicker ! I am 77 !
ReplyDeleteI’m so sorry for the cancelled plans! That’s frustrating and disheartening since I’m sure a lot of anticipation and planning went into your trip! I sure hope that international travel opens up before 2021 for selfish reasons; we want to take an overseas trip before our 8-month old turns two so he can fly free😂 I posted about our 2017 trip to the Amalfi Coast this week if you’d like to travel via your armchair and screen but ignore it if that would make the missing worse!

ReplyDeleteI was just telling the DH and the girls that I'm glad we managed to travel to Tanzania - Serengeti etc and Zanzibar before the pandemic hit home. This was late last year.

So glad I traveled in Dec/Jan (Malaysia too!) but was so glad to come home February. My brother had his May trip to Europe cancelled, and couldn't get his money back, so consider yourself lucky. Things will be different but we will travel again.
