We need those in our throw away world. So much could be salvaged. The last little shop run by and older gentleman in our town is now gone so not sure if there is anyone that does that anymore. Sure would be fun to watch this fella do his talents.
Concerning shoes I rather live where you do! The last time I went, the shoemaker haughtily said, "I'm not going to repair this. It's plastic!" What a great photo! No, we don't have cobblers any longer in my neck of the woods, which is a shame. I honestly don't know where I would go to get a shoe fixed. I would have to just throw it out and buy new ones, which seems wasteful!

No street cobblers. I think we may have one shoe repair place left. I do have fond memories of the repair place my Dad used to use, back in the early 1960's.
I think we have no shoemakers anymore at all ! Shoes have become so cheap that repairing them is more expensive ! Street cobblers I have only seen in North Africa.
That seems to be a thing of the past in my neck of the woods. There used to be a couple of shoe repair stores, but I don't think those are around anymore either.
What a wonderful post, Vero. Just happened to chance upomn it from the old #WW link ups on my page. Yes, we have old school cobblers and they work so hard come rain or shine. Sitting outdoors all day to make a living. I should share a photo with you sometime. We have one right across our condo. A gentle, smiling man.

I'm not sure they are cobblers, but there are shoe repair stores here. Not many, but they do exist. They are not on the streets here though.

ReplyDeleteThe answer to your question is a resounding "no". People do not repair shoes anymore, they throw them away. So many old skills are being lost forever.

It's good to see that the skill is still alive and well! We had a shoe shop where the owner did most of his own repairs but he retired not long ago :(
