The Statue That Wasn’t

At first glance, we thought it was just another statue in the square. We walked past it without giving it much thought. It was only when we came by the same spot a second time that we realised it wasn’t a statue at all — it was a busker, perfectly posing as a living statue.

This photo was taken at Ribeira Square, where the square is usually full of chatter, music, and the occasional sound of fado drifting out from nearby cafés. In the middle of all that bustle, he sat completely still, painted head to toe and blending into the street scene.

Tourists would walk past, hesitate, then suddenly laugh when he gave a small movement — maybe a tilt of the head or a slow mechanical wave — just enough to remind everyone he was very much alive.

And right behind him stood that bright red telephone booth, looking like a tiny piece of London dropped into Porto.

Quirky, playful, charming… totally Porto.

  2. Oh my gosh, I thought it was a statue at first. It would have startled me if I walked past it and it displayed some movement haha. The square looks lively, filled with color and communication. Have a terrific spring week!

  8. We have similar painted "statues" here in summer, but not often and usually they are painted gold or silver so everyone knows they aren't real. Your statue is much more realistic, looking like a real statue.

  18. He really does look like a statue. I wonder how he manages to sit still for so long and what motivates him to do that. Other buskers usually collect donations, but I'm guessing no one would be giving him anything if they thought he was just a statue.

  25. Hello Veronica :)
If people are going to leave him a token of their appreciation he has to move sometimes to show he is a living statue or people will just ignore him. This is the first time I have heard about this, many thanks for bringing it to my attention.

  27. Statue buskars seem to be quite popular these days as I've also seen many in public places. Some are quite remarkable in disguise and antics.

  34. Hello Veronica,

It's really great that you stopped by my blog and left a comment. I still need to reply to the comment, but I wanted to come take a look at yours right away.
Living statues can often be seen in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and I think that's really impressive of them. I wouldn't be able to stand or sit still for that long.

I wish you a very nice weekend.

I signed up to follow you right away.
    Best regards, Helma

  36. Thank you for visiting my blog. Just returning the compliment. Living statues are amazing. It must take great control and discipline to pose for hours on end.

  37. It's amazing how these people who pose as living statues can fool us. It's happened to me many times. It's always a surprise when you finally figure it out.

  40. A delightful little street moment, and one of those scenes that rewards a second glance. The stillness of the performer contrasted with the busy square is what makes it so memorable, especially when the surprise breaks the illusion just enough to make people smile. Ribeira Square in Porto has that kind of character naturally, lively, layered, and full of small moments like this.
