THE BIRDS
As the hubs and I descended into the basement car park of a shopping mall, a flurry of wings suddenly swept past us. We looked up and caught sight of crows perching on the piping and ductwork all around. It was as if their beady, glinting eyes were watching us. Their presence was unnerving. The scene reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. It felt like we had stepped into a horror movie. Just then, the distant roar of wind and rain echoed through the parking structure, announcing a heavy storm outside. More and more crows swooped in, seeking shelter from the pounding rain, their dark forms multiplying as they filled the air and settled around us.
Spotting a crow is supposed to be bad luck, but a murder of them? Yikes! I was spooked and wanted to get away quickly, so I didn't take any photos. However, here are some AI-generated images to capture the eerie scene.
FUN FACTS
"Murder" of Crows : The term for a group of crows is a "murder," which already carries a dark connotation. Seeing a large group of crows has been historically linked to death or tragedy, potentially because of their scavenging nature and their association with battlefields or plagues
Superstitions on Crow Numbers : There are folk beliefs, especially in European traditions, about the number of crows spotted having different meanings:
According to this rhyme, seeing two crows could be seen as good luck, while a large group might not necessarily be bad, depending on the interpretation.
Total comfort food. It's one of those simple, no-fuss dishes that hits the spot every time. Made with soft scrambled eggs and juicy tomatoes, it's sweet, savory, and perfect over a bowl of rice. A lot of people grew up with this dish, so it brings back warm, nostalgic feelings. Whether you're having it for breakfast, lunch, or as a quick dinner side, it's the kind of food that just makes you feel cozy and satisfied.
Son#2 glided bravely across 1,640 feet, and in my excitement to videotape the epic moment, I thought I pressed record—turns out, I didn't! So, the highlight of the adventure exists... only in our memories!

Hallo liebe Veronica,
Beautiful series of photos Veronica.
ReplyDeleteI see beautiful photos of your travels every time, the Colosseum is really beautiful to see.
The AI mice are so cute to see.
I wish you a good weekend.
Greetings Irma
I am not superstitious and to me crows are just birds. Also because in Finland they are so common and often seen in groups. It was fun anyway to read your info about them. 😊
ReplyDeleteYour gladiators are too cute! 😄😄
Dearest Veronica,
ReplyDeleteThose crows indeed can scare one as they are rather large and with their aggressive beaks and strong claws they leave that impression upon us.
Hah the food, miss my Indonesian breakfast...
What a pity that you missed recording your youngest son's glide! But that happens and often such things cannot be repeated.
Would love to glide that longest one in the world—how incredible the speed and the view!
As for the Colosseum, indeed our thoughts go to so many that got tortured and killed there. Loved seeing it but the thought is kind of pressing.
Those gladiator mice look too sweet for surviving...
Hugs,
Mariette
I always enjoy seeing your travel photos and hearing out foods/dishes I am not familiar with.
ReplyDeleteI remember Hitchcock's The Birds very well. I saw it on a cinema when it came. I was scared to death. We have a lot of crows here, but I rearly see them. The gladiator mices are very sweet!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend, Veronica!
I got chills when I read this. Have you counted the crows?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos <3
Greetings and I invite you to see my new painting :)
Birds sense well when the weather changes. And when I see them then I also know if it is going to rain or not. They also express sunshine in their crowing or chirping. Then they are busy with each other and flying back and forth a bit. That's how their communication is and so I never need a weather report. Today they are quiet because it is cold and wet outside. Then they prefer to stay in the trees under the foliage. Also, I liked your photos of your outings and dishes and the mouses again. And wish you and your friends and visitors a nice and cozy weekend herewith from Holland.
ReplyDeleteOh yea, I would have thought about Alfred Hitchcock too with all those birds. The zip line looks like fun to me. Hello little mice!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your post, that's a lot of crows.
ReplyDeleteCrows can be heard around here a lot, especially when a hawk is around. Those AI crows are definitely disturbing and scary! I wouldn't want to be amongst so many of them. Zip lines are fun for those who, unlike me, have no fear of heights. Blessings, Veronica!
ReplyDeleteSuch a delicious food ! Thank you for sharing images of the Rome's Colosseum. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Sunday :-)
So nice shots, thanks for your sharing
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like quite an eerie encounter with those crows! Your vivid description really brings the scene to life. The fun facts about crows and the superstitions surrounding them are fascinating too. I can only imagine how spooky it must have felt at the time. I just shared a new travel post, please read: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/10/visit-dumbarton-castle-scotland-historic-fortress-dunbartonshire.html Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI doubt I would do that but it looks fun.
ReplyDeleteYo tengo cuervos en mi jardín y son muy lindos. Me gustaron los ratoncitos romanos. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThose crows look really scary. Does the Ai generated photo resemble the scene you were in? It's a shame you missed filming your son!! We were at the Colosseum a year ago ! Lovely photos and the mice are always cute.
ReplyDeleteoooh deep fried pork belly - my favourite. Thankfully we don't have crows here but we have blackbirds which is probably very similar.
ReplyDeleteAs a child we often used to see crows when travelling in the vehicle, we used to say those words as you've written but nothing bad happened.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are lovely as are the AI's...always love your mice.
That's chilling! The image of crows filling the basement parking lot is definitely eerie. It's interesting to learn about the superstitions surrounding crows and their symbolism. Now I'm thinking about comfort foods. Do I even have one? Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteA fascinating start to your post today. You wrote it so well, I felt I was there. Great photos and your AI photos are delightful. Those little mice are adorable! A wonderful place for children to play and I found all the facts you shared very interesting. Food looked yummy also. Super post, thank you for sharing your adventures.
ReplyDeleteThe crows have been flying all over lately in swarms which is frightening to watch. Frightening to me is the zip lining your sons did LOL. Love the pics of the Colosseum and it must be intimidating to actually stand before it. TFS your fun travels through your great photos.
ReplyDeleteThe Colosseum is great!
ReplyDeleteAn exciting post today, I like the photos with the crows.
Happy Sunday
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI don't like crows either, they're associated with death! I think they're also bad luck. I'm glad you got away from that car park! The food you show always looks delicious! And your children are very brave, too bad I couldn't get a video of them! I also wonder what happened in historic places like the Colosseum in Rome. I haven't seen the film gladiator oh! but the music is awesome! Happy Sunday!!! Hugs!
Dear Veronica,
ReplyDeleteyour experience with crows in the underground car park sounds really scary - especially when you think of the Hitchcock film. In reality, however, the crows were probably more afraid of the bad weather outside. They can certainly not be seen as a bad omen - there are lots of crows in the fields next to our home year in, year out, I see them every day - and my life is certainly not the unhappiest 😉😅
I can imagine that the deep-fried pork belly with crispy garlic flakes is exactly what I like!
With ziplining, you obviously remind me of two very nice experiences - we did it in both Costa Rica and New Zealand and we had so much fun! The ropes weren't as long as the ones you write about, but it was definitely amazing. I hope we can do it again sometime!
@Gladiator - fascinating that the music lyrics are an invented language. It sounds very authentic. If you had asked me, I would have guessed Gaelic (which wouldn't have really suited the Gladiator film...)
Your gladiator mice are adorable, just like your other AI pictures turned out great!
All the best and have a lovely October,
Hugs Traude
I've always thought the title of "A murder" of crows was interesting. I would have been spooked by them in the parking garage too.
ReplyDeleteYour sons were brave on the zip line. My kids have done it too, I don't think I could.
I would love to see the coliseum. Such amazing history! I never knew that wasn't a real language in the song.
Seeing a crow is a bad sign? How so? Crows are everywhere over here...almost like doves..plenty of them. The food looks delicious. That Chinese tomato and egg stir-fry looks really super.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Covid shutdown, a whole thing about crows popped up on social media. People decided to make friends with crows in their neighborhoods. Crows seem to be intelligent, so there were stories of crows being helpful to the people who started feeding them. Things like making a ruckus when someone got injured and needed help.
ReplyDeleteLove your photos.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
I don't believe in omens, but yeah that crow thing is kinda wierd. It'd be a whole lot different if they were blue jays or canaries. I think.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, I'll hop right over to that deep fried pork belly. Wow, friend. Now, we're talkin'!
Nice set of photos I enjoy the AI ones to and that food looks delish :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a gallimaufrytastic week 👍
That looks like fun, I think I would like to try it! I like crows, they look quite regal. Your mice look as if they had a lot of fun too :-)
very beautiful photos, thanks for your post
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures of the colosseum, and those scrambled eggs with tomatoes looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard the superstition about the crows. The AI generated photos of them do look spooky indeed.
Son #2 was very brave going on the zip line. At least you did get some still photos of him as he was getting off.
Oh those crows look very spooky.
ReplyDeleteIn India crows symbolise the souls of our ancestors hence they are well fed. They are great scavengers too.
ReplyDeleteAll of those crows in a parking garage would be unnerving. I rather like seeing them and hearing their raucous calling. They are very intelligent birds, but outdoors, not in.
ReplyDeleteI like these pictures! So many crows are there and they look little scary. The food looks delicious. Wishing you a great day!
ReplyDeleteRampdiary
Hello,
ReplyDeleteWow, it is strange the crows would hang out inside a parking garage. I like seeing the large groups or a murder of crows outside on a field. Your food looks delicious. I can imagine your sons loved the zip line. I would like to see the Colosseum. The Ai mice are cute! Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead.
PS, thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy day!
DeleteGreat pictures, interesting facts - what's not to like! Nice one.
ReplyDeleteCrows give me the willies, both in person and in the movie The Birds. They're such dirty birds, and often when they're in our yard, it keeps nicer prettier birds away...so I often open the door and yell or blow a whistle to get them to move on. The AI photo gave me a creepy feeling. The climbing and zip line a big NO for me. But, maybe when I was younger like in the picture....maybe? Hubby and I toured the coliseum several years ago when we were on a tour of Italy. Very cool place and amazing to me it's still there, given how old it is. That amazes me a lot with regard to Europe.
ReplyDeleteLove the inspiration you've drawn from the mall parking lot!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in school, we looked for Mynahs and went -- "1 for sorrow, 2 for joy ..." :D
Thank you for bringing back the memory. :)
Seeing the Colosseum must have been awe-inspiring as well as heavy, no?
I hope you're having a good week, Veronica.
Take care. :)
Wow that could been amazing, but mostly sceary
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of crows here. There is one that sits on the overhead cables and imitates my phone ring. The poem we apply to magpies, not crows. For that reason if I see a lone magpie I always salute him and say good morning.
ReplyDeleteThe colosseum is magnificent.
Sometimes I believe in omens...
ReplyDeleteLove all the beautiful shots, but the food is my favorite. I love your delicious food.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥
...Veronica, your travels have taken you to some exciting places, thanks for taking me along.
ReplyDeleteThe crow photos remind me of the story of "The Raven" by Edgard Allen Poe! Spooky! Delicious food as laways--- I go away from your blog hungry each time...lol. I enjoyed visitng the Coliseum twice in my life --the first time in the 70s it was full of feral cats.
ReplyDeleteI like the song a lot! Seeing the Colosseum I suppose is a special experience.
ReplyDeleteI've always asked myself if would be possible to reconstruct it. And not only it, but many other old constructions. It''s only retorical, of course...
Thank you for new series of beautiful images, Veronica!
Hugs and a Happy day! 😘💗
interesting to know bout superstition of "number of crows spotted" .....
ReplyDeletehave a nice day
When I see a crow, I think of Ravens. And when I think of Ravens, I think of the movie, The Omen! Either way the bird in my opinion is bad :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your trips and images. Thank you for sharing.
Take care and best wishes.
The AI crows would make a good art installation in real life....#GMAlinky
ReplyDeleteI like crows but a whole bunch of them would be scary. I'll be passing on the zip line, that would be nerve racking. Thanks for sharing this post and have a nice week.
ReplyDeleteThe Colosseum is grand! You know, Gladiator used to be my favorite movie. I always catch something different in the show every time I watch it. Wow, that's brave of your son to be that high off the ground! My kids did zip lining years ago in Costa Rico; said it was fun. The pork belly dish with garlic flakes looks delicious. The Crows always seem to come around in Autumn.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are enjoying these October days.
