FROM THE TRAVEL ARCHIVES
The Royal Palace, Dam Square 2019
I have been feeling disheartened lately. My beloved country has never been more divided, with race and politics increasingly being the source of tension and conflict in the country. Growing up in the 1960s, we were once a shining example of a harmonious multi-racial country with our eclectic mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and other ethnic cultures. This rich and varied tapestry of cultures and religions was once a source of strength rather than division, and we were proud of our unique national identity.
Recently, MR. DIY, a Malaysian home improvement company, carried out a social experiment in a local mall, and after watching the video, I suddenly felt my spirits lifted. There is hope yet.
Malaysians from all walks of life, races, genders, and ages came to the aid of the elderly man in the video. This is such a profound reminder of who we Malaysians truly are when we put aside our differences. We may be divided by race and religion, but we are all one and the same. We are anak Malaysia.
*anak in Malay translates as children
Take note of the old man's response in several languages and dialects. The average Malaysian speaks three languages: English, their ethnic language in various dialects, and Bahasa Melayu/Malay, which is the country's official language.
Malaysia will be celebrating its 66th Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) on 31st August 2023.
GOD BLESS MALAYSIA!
A video to put a smile on your face π
If animals of different species can live in harmony, why can't we?
FUN FACT
In Malaysia, ginger cats are generally named "Oyen", said to originate from the word orange.
The lovely cat can easily symbolise the multiracial Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteLove the senility prayer.
Happy weekend, Veronica! ππ
thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteWonderful series of photos.
ReplyDeleteThe food looks delicious.
The video of the man with the bags is nice, there are people who are willing to help someone luckily.
I wish you a good weekend.
Greetings Irma
Beautiful street, food and people. Sad most countries are going down the conservative views.
ReplyDeleteI think that history has proven, time and again, that humans will use even the most insignificant reasons to hate each other, and in many countries unscrupulous politicians are only too ready to fuel division. I have only had one all too brief two-day visit to Malaysia, and I was well received everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThe roasted pork and prawns look so good. Cute Oyen!
ReplyDeleteI love local bazaar, thanks for your sharing...
ReplyDeleteI like the seafood dishes, Veronica.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear of Malaysian ethnical combination! As you know, there is a country like that in Europe, as since 1200s Italians, Germans and French speaking people have been living together in Switzerland.
Have a great weekend ☀️
I was saddened to read about the divide within your country, Veronica Lee. It seems there is similar situations in many countries, the US included. Racial tensions and politics can cause so much tension.
ReplyDeleteIt was wonderful to see the photos of the reunion with your neighbors and of course the wonderful food dishes
Wonderful post today. I don't understand these outbreaks of hatred all over the world. No 2 people are alike - except for twins - and for me it doesn't matter which race or religion people come from, it only matters to be kind and have a good heart, and to respect others, regardless of their status. It makes me cringe how hateful people can be. Let's pray for a world united by love and respect. Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteKindness matters. It always did and always will and it's a pleasure to see so many people offering to help the elderly man with his heavy packages. I think everyone in the world is feeling the division and it's sad for all of us. I grew up in the 50s and 60s where most everyone was carefree and happy and I wish we could have that kind of world once again. TFS a little piece of your world today, the photos are all wonderful!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! Those noddles!!
ReplyDeleteAhaha, the prayer... Yes, that's me. I had a pen pal from Kuala Lumpur some 40 yars ago. Still remember her name.
ReplyDeleteDearest Veronica,
ReplyDeleteLOVED seeing Paleis op de Dam of course but also the very hopeful videos.
The gracious help the old man got offered by so many and also the acceptance of the stray kitty at the zoo and a new friendship.
Guess we all ought to learn that the media is NOT showing us the truth!
They have been trying to brainwash into things that are NOT our thoughts and feelings...
Big hugs,
Mariette
I love the Capybaras, and I do like the old man struggling with parcels.
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat that so many Malaysians speak multiple languages! I think it can be so easy to see the strife and discord that disconnects us as a society (we deal with that in the United States too!) but yet I do also notice so many random acts of kindness and compassion when out and about that gives me hope.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to your posts which show up here on a Saturday and there was so much to love this week. Of course I'll always love every bit of the food photos you show, especially my favorite, shrimp. But this time I was moved by your thoughts about the discord in Malaysia and couldn't think how it parallels in some ways that we are experiencing in the States). It makes me so very sad. And yet that video... wow. Yes, there is hope. And we must hold onto hope.
ReplyDeleteAll that food looks so good, I"m a huge seafood fan. Maybe that's a type of cat I'm missing, I've always adopted tabbies, don't know why, they just always come to me.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy seeing your foodie adventures, everything always look so darn good!
ReplyDeleteMe dio hambre y que lindos son los capiribas. Hermosa plaza. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteRica comida me dio hambre, hermosos capibaras. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteRicos platos me gusta el marisco.
ReplyDeleteDeberΓamos hacer como los animales que saben convivir en buena armonΓa.Me encanto el video.
Buen domingo.
Un abrazo.
There's a divide in the world right now. It seems like it's a cosmic lesson, for all of us as humans. May we figure it out before we destroy ourselves.
ReplyDeleteYour noodles are making me hungry!
ReplyDeleteIn the words of the great philosopher, Taylor Swift, we're "livin' for the hope of it all, for the hope of it all"!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your food photos, the seafood is a favorite. What fun to meet up and share a meal with your former neighbors. Beautiful view of the palace. We must never give up hope. The Capybara and kitty are cute. Take care and have a great week!
Sorry to read what happens in your Country, All the best my friend!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I'm a not a fan of seafood but those dishes look very beautiful.
Oh, that senility quote is something else. I'm sorry your country is more divided now, and Yes, there is always hope for the future. I think many countries are divided, and it saddens me as well. Your animals at the zoo are different, and have never seen them before. Those shrimp dishes look so good. That's one of the only fish I will eat. It was good to see the old man getting help by others. Makes my heart glad.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week.
~Sheri
I often ask the question you end with - why can't we all get along even with our differences? Great photos as usual
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if we could all live in peace with each other. I loved the video of Oyen the kitty with the Capybaras. They are cute critters. The meals all look delicious! The veggie seller Ahmed looks happy to sell you some veggie. Thank you for linking up your post. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
Wonderful series of photos.
ReplyDeleteThe food looks delicious.
Big hugs. Have a wonderful day!
I love your photos of food and the marked.
ReplyDeleteYour food always looks so good and makes me hungry, Veronica! I loved the senility prayer---I am 70 and soon headed that way---lol I agree that it seems internal discord is tearing people apart when we should be coming together for the greater good of the entire world. We have to stop the haters and embrace more goodness and kindness in the world.
ReplyDeleteI love capybaras. They are so sweet. The food looks so good.
ReplyDeleteSo funny :D
ReplyDeleteThe capybaras with the cats - that shot is truly a surprise for the eyes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2023/08/the-ever-changing-sky.html
Love your food images. Yes, I do not like watching the news much. There we do see the conflicts, racial and political. It stresses me out.
ReplyDeleteThe senility prayer is the best! It reminds us of Gramma who can't see well anymore and is always picking the wrong things.
ReplyDelete...have a yummy day, Veronica!
ReplyDeleteYour post is an appetizer!
ReplyDeleteI love kitties, but I love your food the very best. You made my stomach growl.

Those shrimp look delicious! It is lovely to see the ginger cat with the capybaras.
ReplyDeleteYou always present food that is so interesting to me, and that cat video is precious.
ReplyDeleteVeronica, there still is hope. Without this thought I remain without oxygen.
ReplyDeleteAnd we have to decipher the manipulations that destroy the relations between people. We must be wise and pay attention...
Happy Today, my friend!
Hugs and blessings!❤️π
what beautiful photos! And the video showing people's generosity and kindness is so encouraging. I think there are evil forces trying to divide people in many nations, trying to make us afraid of each other, but I believe that a majority of people still want to do and be good. Let's not let the darkness win! Thanks for sharing with Everyday Images!
ReplyDeleteYour food is always the best. Fresh and lots of seafood. And you feature your favorite vegetable seller.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you have hope for your country. The USA is being driven apart also and it is very disconcerting. Strangely though I think we will ge through this.

Veronica, when I read your words "I have been feeling disheartened lately. My beloved country has never been more divided, with race and politics ..." I thought, "Wait a minute. I thought she was in Malaysia." Sounded just like the US! Thank you for sharing the positive experience, the food, the humor, and the animals!
ReplyDeleteAmazing pictures...thanks for sharing dear :-)
