I love the food in this Vietnamese restaurant, but I hate, hate, hate their QR code menu. Dining out is one of those epicurean pleasures that should be spared of technology. QR code ordering ruins the experience and is such a chore — the text is too small, takes ages to load and you have to scroll up, down multiple times to read through the full menu. And I hate wasting the first 10 minutes of a social engagement having to navigate a new digital platform every time I dine out. Poring over a traditional oversized menu is part of the fun of eating out and I sorely miss that.
Do we really need an app for everything?
Bring back paper menus, I say.

I have never owned a mobile phone and don't plan to have one either...I would be frustrated if needed an app to order food. ‘Mona Lavender' looks so beautiful!

ReplyDeletePaper menus are best for me too. The local sushi place we patronize now has ipads on the table and a robot delivers the food! Dining out is getting ridiculously expensive anyway, so we mostly eat at home.

ReplyDeleteAs always, your photos are wonderful. And boy, I'm with you on QR code dining. In the first place, my phone doesn't do well with QR codes. And it's so impersonal. I go to a restaurant to be served because at home I'm rarely served! That's part of the experience. And so, it takes away a lot of the intereaction, which I like. I much prefer a printed menu.

Also the yummy Vietnamese food but I've so far kept most apps off my iPhone.
Prefer to view things larger, as on my MacBook or even on my iMac.
Pieter enjoys his iPadPro and no doubt likes anything on his simple iPhone.
Are we all FORCED into this?! It sure does not set the mood for a lovely and relaxed 'yummy' dinner together.

As for the Malay house, so many elements are typical. The open wood carved area above the windows for air (with screen behind) and also the typical wooden door. Rather well done.

ReplyDeleteWe're very fortunate that in the U.S. even though restaurants have the QR codes we can ask for menus and so far I've always been given one. My son's phone is so old that QR codes don't even work!

We have the paper menus all over here in the states. That's a cute little Mala house in the shopping mall. And those purple flowers are lovely as ever. My favorite color too!

That hasn’t reached us here yet (or at least I haven't noticed it), though I think we pay for our coffee at a drive-thru that way and it’s only one item and it’s all in front of you so that is easy. A whole menu would be frustrating, but the dishes look scrumptious. AI is making itself know and goodness knows where that will lead. Thank you for sharing all these wonderful photos from your travels. They truly are delightful!

ReplyDeleteI'm old school and also prefer the menus because I don't have a data plan and wouldn't be able to access the menus on my phone. I have been to a few restaurants where you submit your order on the restaurant's tablet. This was okay with me since the restaurant provided the device.

The name of that red scooteris "Vespa" ... it's an Italian luxury brand of scooters and mopeds manufactured since the eraly 1950s.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciated your words about QR menus!! I hate those too for all the reasons you give, but also because at my advanced age, the difficulties in navigating them make me feel like I'm beyond too old to survive in today's world. The fact that you are obviously closer to my kids' age and also obviously tech savvy makes me feel so much better about myself. (I'll still avoid those restaurants though unless I absolutely can't!). Meanwhile, thank you for your collection, I do love your photos.

No, we do not need QR codes to dine at a restaurant, and thankfully we have not dined at any that did not hav e a paper menu. I would most likely leave if one was not provided. Lovely mix of food and flower photos and also the skywatch photos from your getaway. Where was the Hulk statue?
ReplyDeleteThe Mona Lavender is lovely. I completely agree about the QR codes. If they have them I always ask for a traditional menu. If they are plastic coated there is no problem about keeping them clean.
