FUN FACT
The coins in the Trevi Fountain have to be cleared daily because of the sheer amount being tossed in.
On average, around €3,000 worth of coins are collected in a day— that's over 1 million euros very year!
In 2001, the mayor decided that the money should be collected for a local charity to put a stop to the frequent attempts by people to steal coins from the fountain. Since then, the loose change that ends up in the fountain has been donated each year to Rome's Catholic charity Caritas.
That requires a lot of work and money to maintain...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. You caught the fountain in a rare moment...
ReplyDeleteGlad they donated it to a good cause.
ReplyDeleteGreetings Irma
Thanks for your sharing with us :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the money goes to charity. Nice photo, Veronica!
ReplyDeleteWarm hugs, Marit
Too bad it had to go to a religious charity. The food bank might have been a better choice.
ReplyDeleteAgreed
DeleteCatholic charitable organizations donate large amounts of money to those who suffer from hunger, homelessness, and disease.
DeleteDearest Veronica,
ReplyDeleteFontana di Trevi is a stunning piece of baroque art!
And what a wonderful way to spread those happy donations by visiting people from around the world back to Caritas, a Latin word meaning 'LOVE'.
We both have had great experiences through this excellent organization that help the poorest of the poor.
Our Padre Juan in Chile got help for his poor Mapuche Indians, through Caritas.
Excellent post and it shows the best about Christianity.
Hugs,
Mariette
Wow - that's a lot of coins! I can't believe they have to clean it daily. It's good they go to charity.
ReplyDeleteWow! That’s a lot of euros. While it makes absolute sense, I never thought about the fountain needing to have the coins removed. It’s a good donation to charity.
ReplyDeleteI visited once, so crowded
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt is a great idea to collect the coins each day and donate them to a charity.
maybe they should rotate using different charities. It is a beautiful and famous fountains. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy weekend.
How amazing that there are that many coins tossed in there. Beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pic! Nice the coins are donated to charity.
ReplyDeleteHello Veronica :=)
ReplyDeleteOf course I also thew coins in the fountain when we were there, but little did I know how much money is collected daily or that the fountain had to be cleaned every day to collect that great amount of money. It goes to a good cause, although I tend to agree with you and David about the other charity. Your photo is super interesting thank you for sharing.
Have a happy weekend.
That's got to be a lot of work to clear the coins on a daily basis! Interesting!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! That's a lot of moolah being tossed into the fountain. We plan to be in Rome in 6 weeks. I'll be looking for Fontana di Trevi! I'll share the info about the coins. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love that this loose change is being given to charity, Veronica.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Great idea to donate the money to charity! Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting, Veronica. I'm gald the money goes to a charity. I've visited Rome twice and of course threw coins in the fountain. The first time was sin 1971 and there were just a few people by the fountain. When I went back with my family in 2001 the fountain area was mobbed with tourists and vendors.
ReplyDeleteHello Veronica,
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of work each day! And a lot of money. I'm glad it's going to charity.
I have never seen the Trevi Fountain like this... It is good and important that the coins are now used for a social purpose, dear Veronica!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Sunday and a good new week!

Thank you for sharing a picture of such a great Rome's landmark!
ReplyDeleteThat's nice that they donate the coins to charity. The fountain looks so big in this picture, as the workers look so small. So good of them to clean the fountain like they do. I didn't realize how much money comes through when people toss those coins in daily. This is a lovely photo.
ReplyDeleteHave a peaceful Sunday, dear friend.

It's a shame to read that people would steal from the fountain, but good that the mayor has the money donated to a charity. Of course, there is the expense of the daily cleaning.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the coins go the charity. That's fascinating.

This view of the fountain reminds me of when I visited Rome and it was under renovation. I really do like how all of the coins are put to good use, that is so neat!
ReplyDeleteI like they give the money to charity. With all the people around and throwing coins, the fountain must get very dirty.

That is crazy amazing. It's hard to imagine enough coins each day to add up to that much money.
ReplyDeleteAll the time people believe in such an idea of letting money in a special place like this, as a symbolic gesture. Lovely fountain. It's nice that I could see it bellow the surface of the water...

Awesome! I pray that one day I can go to the land where our Lord walked. Guess its all in what you believe in. I got a necklace from my husband yesterday. It's of Michael the ArchAngel. I guess you could say he's like my patron saint. He kicked the devil out & put him back in hell then and I pray he does it again. I feel like Michael the Archangel is protecting me & keeping Satan away from me too! God bless him. You & your family are always blessed by me every night. HUGS
