Being a Catholic, standing here in St. Peter's Square was the most emotional experience I've ever had.
The Vatican Obelisk, originally taken from Egypt.
The scene featured life-size figures.
This year's Christmas tree in the Vatican — a 30m tall silver fir from Italy's central Abruzzo region.
The six-meter-long sculpture depicts a group of migrants and refugees on a boat wearing clothes that show they originate from diverse cultures and historical moments.
The Swiss Guard makes up the smallest army in the world, comprised of 135 men who act as the private body guards of the Pope and, together with the “gendarmerie” (the Vatican Police), protect all entrance and exit points of the Vatican and Castel Gandolfo, the pope's summer residence.

After queuing for more than an hour just to get into St. Peter's Basilica, we decided to give the Vatican Museums a miss.

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tri you had in Italy. So many things I would want to see there. Jess brought me back a Rosary from the Vatican, and with all the moves I've made in the last five years, I can't find it anywhere. Yes, Pizza in Italy, sounds delicious! The ceiling at St. Peter's Basilica is beautiful. What a grand Christmas tree, and the Nativity is so lovely. I'm glad you had this once in a lifetime trip.

Veronica Lee, what a great day 1 tour of Vatican City and it looks like the weather cooperated too. The Nativity was magnificent as was the tree. But the ceiling of St Peter’s Basilica was extraordinarily beautiful.

I'm not even Catholic (I can see how that would have been a remarkable experience for you in that way). But it is clearly a work of art and a work of faith. ReplyDeleteThere is so much to love here! The giant nativity, the actual Italian piza, the guards, the sculpturee. I will say that the guard's uniforms look a bit clownish, do you think? Anyway, this was wonderful, since we will never be able to go there.

I feel like I've been on a mini-trip to the Vatican after seeing your photos, Veronica. How beautiful the ceiling of St. Peter's Basilica is, with the gold and white decorations. The Nativity scene is lovely, and the sculpture of the immigrants and refugees is a powerful one, especially the side view that shows the size of it, and to me, represents how many refugees there are.

Wow, Veronica. My grandfather immigrated from Italy more than a century ago. That statue spoke volumes to me. Thanks for the tour of the country of my ancestors. I'm really touched.

The nativity scene and the tall Christmas tree will be there, in Vatican Square, until next week. You were so able to took picture of the Vatican Swiss Guard with their unusual red and yellow uniform. It is not easy to take such pictures. Three months ago I saw Vatican Swiss Guard who disagreed with tourists who were taking pictures.

Wow, what great photos you took and so many of high quality. My sister visited the Vatican earlier and she got emotional there and she is not Catholic. I think it is a great spiritual center no matter what religion you are.

ReplyDeleteyou were in the Vatican. My husband and I went there ten years ago. The sculpture with the refugee ship did not exist at that time. I also remember long queues - although we booked in advance, so didn't have to queue at the ticket office - but the visit to the museum was really worth it back then. The cathedral is also stunning. I'm glad you had this magnificent experience.

I've read and seen pictures of the Vatican before (although yours are some of the best detailed ever) but I've never seen the migrant sculpture and it is wonderful! (Tears to my eyes but that is what it is supposed to do of course!). Beautiful post, I loved it! Thank you. (And now Rest and recover from your trip! )
