Red frangipani aka plumeria 
In Asia, it is said that the frangipani shelters ghosts and spirits. Malays associate them with pontianak (vampires)! We grew up believing that an intoxicating scent of frangipani after dark indicates the presence of a pontianak! Whenever our little noses picked up the scent when we were out playing in the evening, we would run home for our lives!

The pontianak manifests as a vampiric pregnant woman who died in childbirth. Described as evil and vengeful, she appears as a long-haired woman in a flowing white robe. Pontianaks steal babies hoping to replace the child they lost.
FUN FACT
The fragrance of the frangipani intensifies at night to attract its pollinator, the sphinx moth.

In 2018, fans of The Avengers went crazy when the iconic logo was spotted on the tower.
Turned out, the projection was part of a collaboration between Marvel Malaysia and TM in a tie-in for the movie 'Avengers: Infinity War'!
The tower does kinda look like the fictional Avengers' Stark Tower, doesn't it?

ReplyDeleteThe picture "endless summer" shows a beautiful place. I also like that pool, although the weather wasn't sunny enough. Thai food seems delicious. And my favourites are pineapple fried rice and fish cooked with lime.

Ooh, Veronica, that vampire story really spooked me; I know if I'd heard that as a little girl, I'd never be able to sleep without a nightlight. The food looks delicious and I loved the story of the tower. Just goes to prove that there is a way to market anything and everything.

ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that such a beautiful plant as frangipani has such a frightening story to tell. But maybe that really has something to do with the parents' wish that their children no longer wander around at night, but come home as quickly as possible when the plant begins to smell.
I find your lantern photos particularly beautiful today - they create such a pleasant atmosphere. Oh, and your food photos remind me I haven't had lunch yet - they are VERY appetizing. It also occurs to me that I wanted to ask you a question: Do you also eat (Korean) kimchi in Malaysia? (I actually started fermenting kimchi at home for the first time...)

ReplyDeleteI love frangipani and want a red one really badly. No one in my area of Florida has this beautiful red flowers. Most of us have the white with yellow centers. I seen pink ones but they are rare here. I tried to order a pink one on Amazon from a grower in Hawaii but it never arrived. I'm puzzled by their association with evil beings.. It is so beautiful.

I enjoyed the sphinx moth flower photo and information because I love sphinx moths. We don't have that species here, of course, but they are a challenge to photograph and are so beautiful. Oh! I want some of the rice in the pineapple!

And the frangipani has such a terrifying story for such a beautiful plant. I love the scent of it. It grew in the jungle in Ecuador where we lived. Love the frangipani - a new color for me - I have only seen them in white with yellow. The problem with paper lanterns is you can never have one - it mushrooms, every time you walk by that store, haha. This is the second time that I see hollowed out pineapple as a food container, such a clever idea. Hope you are doing well? Emille
