Gallimaufry#50

Just a gallimaufry of photos ๐Ÿ“ท
 Red frangipani aka plumeria
In Asia, it is said that the frangipani shelters ghosts and spirits. Malays associate them with pontianak (vampires)! We grew up believing that an intoxicating scent of frangipani after dark indicates the presence of a pontianak! Whenever our little noses picked up the scent when we were out playing in the evening, we would run home for our lives!
The pontianak manifests as a vampiric pregnant woman who died in childbirth. Described as evil and  vengeful, she appears as a long-haired woman in a flowing white robe. Pontianaks steal babies hoping to replace the child they lost.
I do, every now and then, catch a whiff of frangipani at night in my living room but I am pretty sure the fragrance comes from my neighbour's dryer. Or does it??!!๐Ÿ‘ป

FUN FACT
The fragrance of the frangipani intensifies at night to attract its pollinator, the sphinx moth.

Yes, there really is a Starbucks everywhere you look!
Pandu lalu means drive through in Malay.
FUN FACT
There are currently 30,000+  Starbucks stores in the world — 33,833 the last time I googled.

Towering inferno?
Nah, it's just the sun's reflection.

In 2018, fans of The Avengers went crazy when the iconic logo was spotted on the tower.
Turned out, the projection was part of a collaboration between Marvel Malaysia and TM in a tie-in for the movie  'Avengers: Infinity War'!
The tower does kinda look like  the fictional Avengers' Stark Tower, doesn't it?

  12. Dearest Veronica,
LOVE those red frangipani flowers—and the story of the vampire...!
Clever for Parents back then to make their kids rush home by dark ๐Ÿ˜
Did you have to wait long for capturing that red car below the frangipani flowers?!
No doubt the steamed fish in lime sauce is delicious.
Asians are always so creative in presenting the food; masters in the art of garnishing and working with their food.
It is food for the soul and body!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  17. The story behind the frangipani is so intriguing while the blooms are so pretty! I love the pictures of the delicious looking food and those lanterns are amazing! The endless summer sounds fun, but I'm ready for some cool fall weather at last! TFS your fun stories and photos - it's always a pleasant visit!

  18. Dear Veronica,
I'm amazed that such a beautiful plant as frangipani has such a frightening story to tell. But maybe that really has something to do with the parents' wish that their children no longer wander around at night, but come home as quickly as possible when the plant begins to smell.
I find your lantern photos particularly beautiful today - they create such a pleasant atmosphere. Oh, and your food photos remind me I haven't had lunch yet - they are VERY appetizing. It also occurs to me that I wanted to ask you a question: Do you also eat (Korean) kimchi in Malaysia? (I actually started fermenting kimchi at home for the first time...)
All the best, have a nice Sunday and a happy new week!

  24. The crazy stories and old wives tales! We were told not to walk under any tree at night.. especially not with our hair down or we would be possessed by evil jinn.

  25. Frangipani is very beautiful! I did not know about the legends about it--very interesting. Your Thai meal had my mouth watering. It all looks very delicious. I can see why the Avengers logo on top of the building would create a stir!

  27. The world used to be filled with terrifying stories told to children, so they would mind. What a pretty flower to be attached to pregnant vampires. I'm still trying to process that one :) That dinner looks magnificent. All your lovely photos and fun facts makes this a nice post to read.

  28. I love frangipani and want a red one really badly. No one in my area of Florida has this beautiful red flowers. Most of us have the white with yellow centers. I seen pink ones but they are rare here. I tried to order a pink one on Amazon from a grower in Hawaii but it never arrived. I'm puzzled by their association with evil beings.. It is so beautiful.

  37. I enjoyed the sphinx moth flower photo and information because I love sphinx moths. We don't have that species here, of course, but they are a challenge to photograph and are so beautiful. Oh! I want some of the rice in the pineapple!

  38. Dear Veronica,
What a wonderful collection of colour, tastes, and smells from your corner of the world. The Thai food looks delicious. And the frangipani has such a terrifying story for such a beautiful plant. I love the scent of it. It grew in the jungle in Ecuador where we lived. The lanterns are beautiful beacons of light in the darkness. Have a good week.

  39. Love the frangipani - a new color for me - I have only seen them in white with yellow. The problem with paper lanterns is you can never have one - it mushrooms, every time you walk by that store, haha. This is the second time that I see hollowed out pineapple as a food container, such a clever idea. Hope you are doing well? Emille
