Macaque

Banana leaf rice (South Indian cuisine)
Banana leaf rice is essentially rice and an assortment of dishes served on a banana leaf instead of a plate.

A banana leaf meal is best enjoyed using your bare hand as it is said to heighten your senses and enhance the taste. However, forks and spoons are provided for the less adventurous.

Fun fact
The direction in which you fold your leaf after a banana leaf meal conveys a message. Folding inwards towards yourself shows your appreciation to the host for the meal, even if the host is the proprietor of an eatery (as shown in the image above). Folding outwards away from yourself means dissatisfaction with the food, kinda like a rating system though they are some who dispute that this is an erroneous belief. The leaf is also folded outwards during wakes as a sign of condolence to the family of the deceased.

  1. Lovely photos, Veronica! The rose was very beautiful. Oh yes, birds can tease cats. I have seen it many times in my garden.

    Have a great week ahead!

  10. Nice contrasting colours in the sky (orange & bleu).
    Orange rose are my favourite.
If I were to eat South Indian food, I wouldn't use forks and spoons ...
    I would be adventurous :-)

    All the best, Veronica!

  11. That banana leaf meal sounds very interesting (and delicious) Veronica! Do people learn the proper etiquette of which way to fold the leaf as part of their dining experience with it?

LOL with the birds and their perhaps taunting the caged cat. I can see that happening with the birds in our backyard who know they can fly away when Winslow goes charging at them.

    Lovely rose picture too!

Have a fantastic day and week ahead!

  16. Dearest Veronica,
Wow, as always you do bring back many fond memories for me about eating from a banana leaf. I've even prepared a meal here at home when we still used to have our personal banana tree.
It is so special and exotic looking and enhances the meal.
Did not know the banana leaf folding over and its meanings but not surprised.
Thanks for always sharing your expert photos.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  20. That's very interesting about the banana leaf. The Macaque is such a cute fellow. The soft purple flowers are pretty, and of course, I love the Rose. The skies from your balcony are extraordinary. It would be wonderful to just sit out there for awhile and gaze at them.

I hope March is good to you.

  21. As always, enjoyed all the images, Veronica Lee, especially the flowers. Eating on a banana leaf seems like a good way to cut down on dishes too and the fun facts were interesting to learn should I ever have the opportunity to dine on one.

  22. Me encantaron las rosas y las imagenes del cielo y el monito. No sabía lo dela hoja de plátano en mi país las utilizamos para envolver unos pastelitos con masa de maíz que se hacen al vapor. Te mando un beso.

  27. I would try that Banana Leaf tray in a heartbeat as it looks wonderful. But I hope I would remember about how to fold that leaf after. I wonder if travelers ever break a host's heart by doing it wrong accidentally. (I am just assuming that the meal would be a perfect one.) Gorgeous flowers animals skylines and the food (Seems like I always end up commenting on your delicious food photos, but I do love the rest of your posts just as well, really!

  32. I really like the simplicity of how the banana leaf rice is served. This way of serving food kind of reminds me of Texas style bbq.

  35. I'm on the side of the birds Veronica. Those domestic cats don't need extra food do they? I'm fancying one of those banana leaf meals but with knife and fork if you don't mind. But I must agree fish and chips always taste better when eaten with fingers.

  36. Interesting that folding your banana leaf sends a message. We used banana leaves as 'plates' at times in Panama. No dishes!!
Your skywatch photo is just incredible. What a tremendous view.

  52. Unfortunately, I can't find a cat on the pigeon photo, dear Veronica - but I'm sure it was there and would have liked to get involved in the bird dance ;-)
Your flower-, sky- and food-photos are gorgeous again! I only ate from a banana leaf once - in Chettinad / South India - https://rostrose.blogspot.com/2014/03/sudindien-12-kapitel-von-chettinad-nach.html - The food was delicious - but I didn't fold the leaf. It was previously rolled up and dumped by young ladies :-)

Thank you for your lovely comment. I'm happy when my joie de vivre infects you - that's better than most other infections ;-)
All the best and have a nice weekend,
    Traude
