W/W - Borders Lives On

Yes, Borders still lives on in Malaysia, the last of the four surviving overseas locations - Dubai, Oman, Malaysia and New Zealand.
Interestingly, did you know that the Borders in Berjaya Times Square, Malaysia once held the record for being the world's biggest Borders store at 60,000 square feet (5,600 m²); however, this has since changed with the closure of one level of the store. There are now 6 Borders outlets in Malaysia under a different ownership.

Although digital book are all the rage now, we Malaysians are still diehard book readers. Don't you just love spending hours and hours in bookstores and libraries, losing yourself in a haven of books, pulling them out of the shelves and loving the way they feel in your hands? Touching, smelling, reading the black blurb and leafing through the pages is a pleasure that can't be experienced digitally.
What about you? Are e-books for you?

  1. Hello my dear,
It's snowing again, like in the fairy tells .Dana has a book about dinosaurs and she told me that it smells like dinosaurs!Yes,I love the velvet touch and the smell of a new book-you describe it so beautiful but the new generation was born with a computer in their hands. There's so much information and technics that there's no time for simple emotions just touching an "old fashion" book. Love you!

  2. I used to spend my downtime and lunch hour in a Borders that was located in the World Trade Center complex before 9/11...now I try to do the same in Barnes and Noble since I still prefer the leafy page turning rather than the digital...I dont think any Borders are left in NYC, glad to see I'm not the only one fond of them lol

  3. I do use the Kindle app on my tablet but I prefer to hold a real book in my hands - especially for children's books.

  4. I LOVE libraries. I worked in them as a young woman. I like the order and variety and knowledge that libraries boast. I LOVE books too. In the end though, it's the story that wins me, so e-readers are okay with me.
    Happy Hump Day, Veronica.

  5. I have a Kindle and actually love reading on it. However, I also love going into a bookstore or library and coming out with a new book to read. I can go either way, but if the book is huge, I would rather it be on the Kindle as my arthritis makes it difficult to hold large books sometimes.

  6. I haven't moved into the ebook era yet. I still love the relaxing feeling I get when I cuddle under my blankets with a book in hand.

  7. I spend soo much time in front of a screen as is ... so reading a paper book is a nice vacation. Plus, they're usually cheaper than digital at thrift stores and yard sales.

  8. I'm with you. There is nothing like being able to browse books and hold a book in your hand. I like to highlight and use post it notes in books. It's just not the same on an ereader! Long live Borders in Malaysia.

  9. This sounds really lame of me, but I actually cried when I went into Borders for the last time. I just would go all the time. The boys loved it there. They even had cool gifts. The main area of interest was the childrens book section.

I'm not interested in e-books, maybe someday I will be. I should get into that because that is where design is going. Design is what I teach. I just can't get into apps and e-books just yet.

  11. I'm a bit jealous that you still have a Borders--I miss ours so much! I haven't made the switch to e-books--I simply like the feel of a real book in my hands too much. :D

  12. I MISS BORDERS!! I used to love to go in there and look at all the displays when you walk into the store. I really miss that. We have one or two book stores open around here, but they aren't the same and I don't go there.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and I have to admit to really liking it. The minute I finish a book, I can just get another one! I think I read more now that I have the Kindle.

  14. Hubby is all about downloading books, etc etc... Me? I LOVE going to the local library with my children. We would check out the whole library if we could! I have my own book collection at home from my teaching days... but I still take the children to the library. We just love being surrounded by books. We could spend all day there too. No, no downloads for me. We will keep Barnes and Nobles and our local libraries in business! And we were sorry to see Borders at our local mall go... :(

  15. I personally prefer actual books. The kindle and all that is great for travel but on a day to day basis I would much rather hold a book! Thanks for coming over and saying hi at my blog!
