Living Room Trivia

In the UK and Australia, the living room is known as sitting room, lounge room or lounge. The Malay word for living room is 'ruang tamu', literally translated as 'guest space'.

In modern homes and apartments, the living room has replaced the old-fashioned front parlour. In modern use, the parlour is a formal sitting room in a large house or mansion.

Synonyms for living room include best room, common room, drawing room, foreroom, front room, salon, withdrawing room, guest room.

  1. Great pictures...shows that real rooms can look good.

"Drawing Room" never made sense to me! Always heard this in old movies.

  2. I found out UK people say lounge for living room. I was reading an architectural digest and the article kept referring to lounge and I thought it was like a little room with a bar or something. It was until I finished the article that I realized "lounge" is "living room".
