Foie Gras

I was never a fan of foie gras so keeping it off my plate is no big sacrifice on my part but I totally loved shark fin's soup when I was a kid until I was old enough to know where they came from. I've never had one since discovering the truth.

I received these pics in an e-mail today. I know they are not pleasant to look at but I could never forgive myself if I did not share this information to those who are still unaware of the truth behind the foie gras industry.

"Foie gras," literally fatty liver,a disease marketed as a delicacy.


A foie gras duck (or goose) is bred specially, and, beginning when the bird is 8 to 12 weeks old, it is force-fed several pounds of cornmeal two or three times per day through a long metal tube inserted in its throat
Ducks and geese suffer tremendously during and after the force-feeding process. Within just two weeks, their livers have become diseased and have swollen up to ten times their normal size—a condition known as hepatic lipidosis. The birds can scarcely stand, walk, or even breathe, panting and struggling to stand, using their wings to push themselves forward when their crippled legs can no longer support them.

    I've seen this made before (on TV) and never really understood what it was!!

  2. i used to be a huge fan of shark fin soup and foie gras. and u r so rite, after i heard the truth, i've been totally off them!
    the other day, i watched "shark water", i literally cried for the sharks!

  5. I have to admit that I have never even heard of it before. I would definitely not eat it. I'm so sad for the geese or ducks. That's beyond cruel.

  6. Oh my gosh. I love foie gras! But these pictures are horrifying! Just goes to show that we can't be ignorant consumers! I don't think I'll be eating foie gras again! Eeeeew!

  7. I have never had foie gras, I don't usually order anything unfamiliar. After seeing this, I am just disgusted. What an absolutely horrific thing that people put these poor animals through for the sake of some delicacy. Thank you for opening our eyes to what is really going on here.

  11. Whoa! Just watched something on the Food Channel with foie gras. Always wanted to try. Guess I don't need to want to do that anymore.
