The Birdman of Porto

While wandering the streets of Porto, I came across this extraordinary street performer surrounded by birds perched calmly on his curious collection of masks, chimes, sticks and musical contraptions.

The centerpiece of it all was a hurdy‑gurdy — a medieval string instrument he cranked by hand, producing a droning, violin‑like sound that blended with the gentle chiming of his setup.

The birds seemed completely at ease, as if they were part of the performance — quietly observing the crowd from their little perches while the whole assemblage gently chimed and clinked in the breeze.

Naturally, I went home and tried to Google him. Surely someone this unusual must be famous, right? But surprisingly, I found almost nothing about him.

Who is he?
A local character? A travelling performer? A well-known busker that everyone in Porto recognizes but nobody has written about?

Sometimes the most memorable people in a city leave the smallest trace on the internet.

If anyone knows the story behind Porto’s mysterious bird busker, I’d love to hear it.

  3. Interesting! I will come back later and watch the video. ( Hubby is asleep just now, don't want to wake him.) Porto! We had a Portuguese family who owned a restaurant here, they would come to me at the travel agency and get tickets to fly back to Porto. Wish I could fly there!

  5. I know nothing about him and the birds almost don't look real. I remember when I was a little girl, I used to hear the expression hurdy‑gurdy . I did not know that it is actually an instrument. Fun post

  11. Hello Veronica, from a very hot Greece. I watched the gentleman playing that music with great curiosity and admiration. Was it just me, or did he look as though he had stepped straight out of a fairy tale?

  23. That is so neat! I feel that way about a street performer we saw in Quebec, Canada years ago (gosh, it must be nearly 18 by now as I know my youngest was a literal baby) who was painted head to toe in gold and put on quite a performance.

  27. I don't know who he is, but he appears to be inspired by Salvador Dali's surrealist art style, since he has his picture on the base. I love all those birds, and can't figure how he trained them to just perch on his musical contraption. Thanks for sharing!

  37. Isn't that something? And that's so unusual that the birds just come around and sit and be, just enjoying the music. I'm a bird lover, so I noticed the Eurasian colored Dove, and I'm wondering if that's a white Dove? I loved the video, and his music is so calm and lovely. It's like the birds are singing along with him. What a wonderful post this is, my friend. Thank you!

  43. Very interesting and unusual. I'm going to make myself a note, as hubby and I going to be touring Portugal this fall. We're flying into Porto and out of Lisbon. So....I'm very curious. Perhaps our tour guide will know something about it. Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I will add you to my blog log. Love meeting new bloggers.

  44. A different performance from what we are used to seeing.
The birds are free but don't fly far, they are well trained to play their part in the little show.
Every time I've visited Porto I've never found him.
    Have a nice week
